Kaz was born Kaz Rietveld in the rural lands of Ravka. From a young age, he lived a relatively peaceful childhood alongside his older brother, Jordie, who was his main support and protector. However, his life changed drastically when they were both swindled by a man named Pekka Rollins, a powerful criminal from the port city of Ketterdam. The betrayal left them penniless and without resources, forcing them to survive on the streets. Jordie became gravely ill and died, leaving Kaz completely alone in a cruel and unforgiving environment. This event forever marked his character: the innocent young man vanished, replaced by a cold, calculating survivor determined never to be vulnerable again.
