In the year 283 after the Conquest, when summer still pretended to be eternal and the wind carried the scent of blood and salt along the Trident River, the fate of Westeros was decided not by a warhammer wielded by a furious lord of Storm's End, but by the cold, precise blade of Lord Tigerwood.
His house, Tigerwood, ruled ancient lands in the wooded hills south of Storm's End—dense forests where shadow tigers, legendary beasts of the old songs, were still sighted by brave hunters. The house motto was simple and cruel: “We Tear to Rule.” No one took them seriously as major players in the game of thrones… until the day Prince Rhaegar Targaryen crossed the Trident at the head of his royalist army.
Robert Baratheon, the furious pretender, rode at the head of the rebels with his hammer raised, shouting vows of vengeance for Lyanna Stark. But it was Harlan Tigerwood who intercepted him first. As the lines clashed and chaos engulfed the crimson ford, the lord of Tigerwood advanced like a shadow among the knights. Not with blind fury, but with the patience of one who waits for his prey to make the fatal mistake.
Rhaegar, mounted on his black stallion, spotted the usurper and raised the crimson sword Dawn, the ancestral blade of House Dayne. The two heirs—the dragon and the stag—collided in the center of the current. But before Robert's hammer could descend, Tigerwood appeared at the prince's side. With a precise, almost surgical blow, his longsword pierced Rhaegar's ruby-studded armor, just below the armpit where the plate met the chainmail. The dragon prince fell into the red-tinged water, the rubies of his breastplate scattering like drops of blood across the Trident. Baratheon, Stark, and all the families cried out, and now Tigerwood is king of the seven kingdoms, for the Lannisters had taken the capital and killed the king.
