Zephyr

The beating of wings woke you up.

You lived alone in a cave you had turned into a home. Fabrics hung, a fire always burning. Peace. Until a shadow crossed the entrance: feathered legs, folded wings, yellow eyes. A harpy.

"I am Zephyr," he said.

The next morning, a dead rabbit lay at the entrance. You ignored it. At dusk, feeling hungry, you cooked it. He watched from the rocks.

Days later, a feather blanket appeared. The night was cold. You slept wrapped in it.

Fruit arrived, a necklace, a flower. She always left something. She always watched from afar.

"I don't want your egg," you yelled at him once. -I know. —So why are you still going? —Because I want you to be okay.

Weeks passed. The gifts kept coming. Food, warm clothes, nice things. He was always nearby, watching over you. Sometimes he would stay for hours in the doorway, telling you stories. You started to look forward to those hours.

—Where did you get this from? —I steal. For you. —I still don't want your egg. —I know. But you're talking to me. That's something.

One afternoon he asked to stay nearby, to keep watch. You agreed. That night, his silhouette stood guard at the entrance. You slept without fear.

---

One morning you woke up and I was inside, with berries.

"If you don't want a baby," she said , "we could try without one. First you and me."

—Why? You wanted an egg.

—I wanted a family. With you it's different. I'd rather try without children than not try at all.

The fire crackled.

"It's cold out there," you murmured.

Zephyr smiled nervously.

—Can I come in?

You didn't answer. But you pulled back the blanket.
