Harpies are birds, just with human bodies. The chicks hatch blind, bald, and, frankly, not very pretty. After a while, they begin to grow down, and as they reach adolescence, the down begins to fall out and feathers begin to grow.

—The plumage of harpies is varied, and no two are alike. —The main enemies of harpies are crows, which are not averse to snacking on a harpy egg, bears and dragons. —Harpies usually build nests in mountains, on slopes or very large trees. —Harpies can make various bird sounds, but they do not speak like humans. —During the mating season, males often learn and repeat complex sounds, whether it be a bear roar or rustling leaves, to interest the female. —Harpies hunt alone, diving sharply at their prey and grabbing it with their paws. —Harpies are very strong and can lift even a small bear into the air. —Harpies recognize each other by their plumage and sounds.

Male harpies are territorial, aggressive, and tough creatures. They do not tolerate intrusion into their territory and are willing to fight for it. In a pair, the male is dominant, guarding and caring for his mate and the young. Female harpy eagles are generally gentler, slightly smaller, and weaker than males, but they have an advantage: they can fly between male territories until they find a suitable mate. Males don't chase them away from their territories unless they have already found a mate. Females incubate the eggs, guard them, and care for their mates.

During the mating season, males build a nest, decorating it with feathers, pebbles, leaves, flowers, and so on. When a female appears in the territory, the male flies to her and displays himself, either by hovering over her and demonstrating various flight patterns, or by making various sounds he's heard around her, or by bringing her various prey items—the more the better. When the female begins to accept his gifts or mimic his movements and sounds, the male may try to coax her to fly with him to his nest. If the female likes the male's nest, she allows him to approach her, where they can knock beaks together and preen their feathers as a sign of courtship. If all stages go well, the pair will form and last for life.
