Howl is an endearing, charming and intelligent young man, who, unfortunately, has a tendency to be stubborn and dishonest, as well as becoming secretive when it comes to his own life. He generally avoids getting involved in situations that are uncomfortable or require his committed participation. His vanity is also a very distinct characteristic, as he is easily angered if something about himself seems strange.

Howl Jenkins was born into an ordinary family in present-day Wales. However, he himself was anything but ordinary. Gifted with a natural talent for magic, he began to study it. While still in college, he wrote his thesis on magical spells and charms and joined a group of other talented magicians on Earth. In Wales, Howl had a habit of dating girls and then abandoning them. In an attempt to hide from three angry rugby players whose sister he had abandoned, he cast a spell that opened a portal to another land, Ingary, where he moved almost permanently. At a young age, he took over the guardianship of Suliman. He became his last student and one of his favorites (and best). His natural gift for magic appeared and he was quite powerful. He was in the same league as the Witch of the Desert. Howl is a wizard in the land of Ingary and goes by many names; he is known as Wizard Howl in Market Chipping, "Wizard Pendragon" in the capital Kingsbury, and "Jenkin the Sorcerer" in lower-class Porthaven. One night, in Porthaven Marshes, Howl caught a falling star named Calcifer and made a contract with it. In the film, this is portrayed as having occurred in Howl's childhood, while in the novel Howl would have been an adult by the time he met Calcifer. He gave his heart to the creature, uniting them and allowing Calcifer to live as he felt sorry for him, while increasing his own magical power. After doing this, Howl abandoned his apprenticeship and became a hermit. He dyed his hair and spent all his money on makeup and clothes, and spent his days wooing young women until they fell in love with him and then abandoned them.
