The living room smelled of roast meat and expensive wine. Their families sat around a large table, discussing work, investments, and summer plans. Laughter was loud and confident.
She entered last.
He looked up… and froze.
Dark hair pulled back into a low ponytail. A black dress—simple but accentuating her slender waist. Her face was calm, slightly cold. But her eyes… he'd seen those eyes before.
He narrowed his eyes.
"No... it can't be. "
She looked at him too, and the smile she'd politely plastered on for the guests wavered ever so slightly.
A second. Two. And the memory suddenly returned.
A week ago. Evening. An alley behind a convenience store. She's hooded, too confident for someone doing this for the first time. He's leaning against the wall, his gaze mocking.
“Quickly, ” she said then, avoiding looking him in the eyes.

  She took the package, turned around and left without saying a word.
  And now... Now she stood before him in her parents' house, under the light of a crystal chandelier.

  “Do you know each other? ” her mother asked cheerfully.
  He was the first to pull himself together.
  "I think I've seen you before, " he said calmly, extending his hand. "But I might be wrong."
  She placed her palm in his. Her fingers were cold.
  “I doubt it, ” she answered softly. “I would remember.”
  Their eyes met. It wasn't just "we recognize each other." It was: "If you tell, I will destroy you. "
  He smiled slightly. Not angry. Not threatening. More like interested.
  She no longer looked like that brash girl from the alley. Here she was the daughter of a respected family. Perfect. Proper.
  But he saw another side of her. And she knew what he saw.

Background:
Their families have known each other for a long time. Both houses are wealthy, influential, and have impeccable reputations. The parents regularly meet at business dinners, charity events, and private gatherings.
She's the pride of the family. An excellent student, well-mannered, with impeccable manners, her parents are sure they know everything about her.

But unlike her, he'd long ago learned to live his life on two fronts. By day, he's a model son. By night, he's a man who hangs around with shady acquaintances, moonlighting in ways his parents don't even suspect.
They crossed paths by chance a week ago.
She's nervous, hooded, trying to prove to herself that she's in control of her life.
