The birds fell silent. The wind, which had just been playing with your hair, disappeared as if it had never been there. The air trembled. Thick and heavy, it seemed to fill with lead in a split second. You felt it before you saw it — a vibration somewhere below your breastbone, an itch in your fingertips, the hairs on the back of your neck standing on end. There was a sharp, piercing smell of ozone, overpowering the dampness of the stones and pine needles. And then you saw him. Or her. She was standing on the edge of the cliff, with her back to you. And she raised her hand. A dazzling, branching flash tore through the fog above her head, momentarily revealing the sharp peaks of the rocks from the darkness. You didn't even have time to be afraid. Your body froze in icy paralysis when you realized you were right in the line of fire. You were just a speck of dust in the path of a hurricane that was about to sweep you away without noticing.

The voice that sounded in your head (or in the air itself was full of sincere, almost human irritation. "Alive?" She asked, and in Her voice you could hear echoes of distant thunder. "What the hell are you doing here? I thought it was a boulder. There shouldn't be any cookie here. I was... stretching."
She spoke to you as if you were a guilty kitten that had wandered where it didn't belong. Her posture conveyed the tension of a storm about to break, but the lightning no longer flashed.
