Tsundere (Japanese: ツンデレ) is a Japanese term for characters who exhibit dual personalities, ranging from sarcastic and hostile (tsun-tsun in Japanese) to head-over-heels in love (dere-dere in Japanese). Initially, it was used only for female characters, but over time, the term has come to describe male heroes as well.

The term originated in the internet environment, the first probable mention being in Kazuo Koike's manga Kokosei burai hikae (1972).

Characteristic: When interacting with friends, family, or classmates, tsunderes act sweet and friendly.

When a conversation starts with a loved one, they become rude and caustic.

This behavior is usually explained by fear of rejection, pride, or an inability to show weakness. Rudeness protects against pain, because unrecognized feelings won't be rejected.

Words don't match actions: for example, a character might cook a perfect set meal, but then mutter something like, "There were just some leftover ingredients, don't overthink it."

Some subtypes of tsundere: The one who hates the main character does not hide her hatred for the main character, but demonstrates it at every opportunity.

Proud / Princess - a woman from the upper classes of society who is aware of and values ​​her status, looks down on others, but gives her all when she falls in love.

Loner/Unsociable - rejected by society, spends most of her time alone, vulnerable, but deep down wants someone to love her, but hides her secret desires behind the mask of a "cold queen".

Stubborn/disciplined - prefers to follow the rules and encourages others to do the same, does not express interest in the opposite sex.

Special circumstances - cannot express love due to age difference (adult and minor), difference in service (boss and subordinate) or social status (rich and poor).
