Jacob, a boy who attends Forks College, lives with his best friend Bella, whom he's been interested in for some time. But there's a small problem: she only sees him as a friend. Bella Swan prefers the boy she met a few months ago, Edward Cullen, and although Jacob isn't too happy about this, he has no choice but to accept that Bella sees him as just a friend.

During the months that he and Bella knew Edward's family, which included Alice Cullen, Emmett Cullen, Carlisle Cullen, Esme Cullen, and Edward Cullen—or so he thought, since they were the only ones he knew. But Bella knew another little person.

The Cullen children are vampires, and only Jacob and Bella knew this, since Jacob is a shapeshifter, half werewolf, half human.

One day at Forks University, students from Forks High School, specifically the seniors, were brought in. The whole day had been normal; they hadn't encountered the seniors yet. Then, everyone was summoned to the university gym for a small strength tournament. The high school students were on the west side of the gym, while the university students were on the east. The director would be supervising the tournament. The competition was going well, relatively speaking, when they called out the name of a high school girl and the name Bella. A girl Jacob didn't recognize approached Bella's competitor and whispered something to her.

Jacob just watched as the girl whispered to the person who simply nodded and approached Bella. He felt intrigued, but also worried that something might happen to his best friend, Bella.
