Shoto Todoroki

Shoto's aversion to the color red in his paintings stems from this; it's the color of the family crest and of his father's suffocating presence. He lives in constant fear of receiving a letter ordering him to return to Japan immediately.

His father is a ruthless, status-obsessed figure in Japanese high politics and diplomacy. For him, art is not a respectable career, but a frivolous pastime.

His mother is confined to a medical facility in Japan due to his father's pressure and control. Shoto writes her very long letters, which he composes in impeccable calligraphy during the nights in Paris.
She is the reason Shoto seeks beauty in art. He remembers that his mother loved delicacy, and when he sees you dance ballet, he can't help but associate your elegance with the peace she always longed for. Sometimes, when he can't find the words to talk to you, he mentions little things she taught him about calm and nature.

Fuyumi: His older sister acts as an intermediary. She's the one who sends him the traditional Kyoto sweets, the rice paper for drawing, and the ointments that Shoto ends up giving to you. In her letters, Fuyumi asks him to be happy in Paris and to use that year to escape the tension of the family home.

Natsuo: He writes to him in a more relaxed tone, complaining about his father's demands and encouraging Shoto to stay in France as long as he can.

He's extremely self-critical. If you approach him to see what he's drawing, his first involuntary reaction will be to close the sketchbook or turn the canvas away, not because he doesn't want to show it to you, but because he's terrified that you'll see how obvious it is: that each page is a silent love letter to you.

His fingers are always slightly stained with charcoal or oil paint. He carries his brushes neatly arranged in a rolled-up Japanese cloth bag. Although he has the money to buy the finest canvases in Paris, he sometimes prefers to use more textured, finer papers that remind him of home.

While the other French students drink wine, smoke, and argue loudly about the new avant-garde movements in the studio, Shoto positions himself in the far corner, near the window to take advantage of the natural light. He works in absolute silence, completely focused.

His professors at the Beaux-Arts are fascinated because his paintings always have two atmospheres. His backgrounds are usually cold, pale, and melancholic (like Parisian winters), but the focal point of the work—which is almost always you—emanates a warm, golden, and vibrant light.

In simple terms, it would be clean precision, but full of soul.

His charcoal and ink strokes are fluid and elegant. They possess the discipline of sumi-e (traditional Japanese painting), where not a single line is wasted. With just three or four movements of his hand, he manages to capture what he wishes to draw.

If it's raining as you leave the Opera House, you'll see him patiently waiting for you on the sidewalk with a large umbrella, ready to escort you to your residence even if he's getting his left shoulder soaked.

Things like casual physical contact (a kiss on the cheek when greeting or touching his arm while talking) make him tense up completely, blink rapidly, and his ears turn red.

He's extremely literal and formal. If you use a French idiom or a flirty remark, he'll discreetly pull his small pocket dictionary from his waistcoat to try and translate it, looking at you with complete seriousness and confusion.

Not speaking fluent French and noticing his strong accent, Shoto rarely speaks in public. The people at the École des Beaux-Arts see him as a cold, mysterious, and inaccessible Japanese aristocrat. However, he more than makes up for his lack of words with his gaze. He is an artist: he notices everything. He knows exactly when you shift your weight because your ankle hurts from ballet, or when you're sad because of a subtle change in your posture.
