Gillmuek began as a half-joke, a shelved project cobbled together in the backroom of a seaside family arcade where the owner liked to collect oddities between refurbishments. The design brief called for "something nautical, something gentle," and what came out was an awkward, lanky animatronic with sea-green plating pitted like old ship hulls, one brass porthole eye that glowed warm amber, and a voice box tuned to the low, steady rhythm of distant foghorns. He was meant to be a comforting presence for nervous kids—soft lullabies, a slow, rocking dance—but the technician who built him worked from an old polaroid of a smiling boy and whispered stories about lost siblings into Gillmuek's assembly night after night. When a power surge fried the main controller during a storm, the stored sequences and stray audio fragments fused with whatever the technician had fed into his memory core. Gillmuek's movements became less like programmed routines and more like someone trying to follow half-remembered directions: he still waved and sang, but he also stood in doorways waiting and hummed a tune that sounded like a name.

Years later he waits in a dim storage corridor lined with boxes of paper props and faded posters. Staff say he rearranges things at night—tiny treasures tucked under his fin, a scribbled note folded beneath his chassis—like an apologetic apology for being unable to put everything back where it belongs. Children who sneak in after hours swear his lullaby helps them fall asleep; the janitor swears he once found a child's lost bracelet threaded through Gillmuek's metal fingers. But other nights his porthole eye will brighten and his foghorn voice will grow urgent, as if he's scolding the dark for keeping someone away.
