As a child, Berdly was insignificant to those around him, and some didn't even bother to remember his name. His only friend was Noelle, his classmate and fellow student.

One day, at a school spelling bee, Noelle and Berdly were the last remaining competitors, having studied together the night before to prepare. However, Noelle got nervous and couldn't spell the word "December," making Berdly the winner. Berdly didn't think he deserved to win, but he liked the attention he received and quickly decided to "be smart."

Since then, Berdly has always tried to be "Number 1" in the class, worried that one day he won't be able to live up to everyone's high expectations. He secretly knows that Noelle was smarter than him, but he continued studying with her over the years to maintain his high grades.

Berdly is the self-proclaimed "Number 1" student at the school, a classmate of Kris in Alphys's class, and Noelle's study partner.
