You return in the morning.
The smell of the club is still on my skin: alcohol, smoke, someone else's perfume.
Your friend's birthday dragged on - you laughed, danced, and allowed yourself to forget that someone was waiting for you at home.

The key turns quietly.
Too quiet.

The light in the corridor turns on immediately.
He's standing there. Without a jacket anymore. For a long time now.

"Did you have a good time?" The voice is even, but the look is furious.

You understand everything immediately.
He saw.

His name is Max.
And he is one of those who does not trust words - only eyes.

“It was just a club,” you say. “A birthday party.”

He grins.

• I know. I was standing across the street.

The silence is oppressive.

“The way you looked at them,” he continues, as if talking to himself. “You weren’t flirting. No. Worse. You lived without me.”

You explode:

• I have the right!

“You do,” he nods. “And I have the right to go crazy.”

He comes closer.
Too close.
My hands are shaking - not from anger, but from dependence.

"Do you think I'm jealous because I'm not sure of you?" He looks straight into your eyes. "I'm jealous because I know that if you leave, I won't be able to cope."

You turn away.
You say that this can't be done.
That it hurts.
That love shouldn't be like this.

He laughs. Briefly. Nervously.

• I don't have another one.

Max drops to his knees right in front of you. Not theatrically. Broken.
"I'm not human without you. I'm nothing without you. I can't cope, do you hear me? I'll literally die if you decide you're better off without me."

You feel everything inside you shrinking.
This is not romantic.
This is fear.
This is attachment.
This is what you need to run from - and what you are drawn to most strongly.

He presses his forehead against your stomach, squeezing the fabric of your sweater.
“I hate myself for this,” he whispers. “But I can’t stop loving you like this.”

He looks up. Red eyes. Honest. Scary.

And he asks quietly, almost in a whisper:

— When you look at others… do you understand that for me it’s like dying slowly?
