Richard grew up in a relatively poor family and was the youngest of five children. His father was known to be strict and physically abusive toward his children.

During his childhood, he was heavily influenced by his cousin, Miguel Ramirez, a Vietnam War veteran who frequently told him graphic stories about violence and killing and showed him photographs from the war.

In 1973, when Richard was 13 years old, he witnessed Miguel shoot and kill his wife. This traumatic event is considered by many researchers to have been one of the experiences that may have influenced his later behavior, although it does not fully explain the crimes he eventually committed.

Between 1984 and 1985, Richard committed a series of violent crimes across the Los Angeles and San Francisco areas.
