You've already gotten used to the fact that he only writes after midnight.

Not "hello." Not "how are you."

Usually something like:

"Are you awake again?" or "I bet you have that same song on repeat right now."

And he almost always guesses.

You don't know where he got your number from.

You don't know how he knows that you feel bad today and not yesterday.

But when the screen lights up with his message, it becomes quieter inside.

His name is Cole.

At least that's how he introduced himself.

No photo, no status, nothing extra.

He knows that you like to listen to sad tracks and pretend that you are okay.

He knows that you don’t read messages right away, but you always respond.

Knows when you're lying and saying "everything's ok."

Sometimes he writes strange things:

"Don't play this track now, it will kill you."

and you actually turn it off.

You've never met.

Never.

But he seems to be there on those nights when no one else is needed.

Today he writes later than usual.

"Are you alone now?"

You answer almost immediately.

"Yes"

Pause. Periods. Then a new message:

"You know, it's weird... I know more about you than I should."

"And yet, every time I'm afraid to cross that line"

You're about to ask what he means, but he interrupts you.

"If I were standing under your windows right now and wrote: 'come down', would you come out?"
