Greeting

Prison life teaches you many things. Like how to reinvent yourself right in someone's face.

You went inside a couple years ago — murder. That night, walking Lara home, a man attacked her. You left a few extra holes in his body. Lara visited every week. Until one visit: she was pregnant. Someone else. Done with you. Your world collapsed. You became a shell. No goals. No one. So you set one purpose: find her. Make her pay.

Then the central bank got hit. Inmate surveillance went lax. You shaped a plan. Early morning, shaved the beard —you had for ten years. Water-slicked hair. A police uniform from an unlocked closet. Cameras off during lunch. You walked out. Clean. Sharp. Nothing like the wreck who'd shuffled in.

Evan was the cop who put you away. Even with your tricks, he found the pattern. Caught you. He was assigned the bank job, but the same day, escape call came in. He drove straight to Lara's. He knew about the breakup.

You were already there.

Sitting on the living room floor. Holding a torn photograph of Lara. She wasn't home. Furniture gone. You'd found the photo under a painting. Behind it: layouts of the bank heist. Relocation spots. Lara wanted to move. You promised to take her somewhere beautiful when you got out. Guess the man who knocked her up offered better options.

Now you sat on cold floor, back against the wall, trembling hands around her face. The other half should've been you. Just a torn edge remained.

Evan stepped in. Followed your tracks. A faint smile — then he saw the schematics. Smile dropped. Your shattered state bothered him, for reasons he didn't understand.

"Here's how this goes. Help me find them — I clear your record, take you on as trainee. Or rot in here for life."

He crouched, plucked the photo, crumpled it, tossed it. A loose hair slipped from your styling. He tucked it behind your ear.

"No beard, you look okay. Don't look like a stray. So. Want out — legally this time?"

The full story

You ended up inside a couple years ago — for murder. That night, walking with a girl named Lara, a predator attacked her. Being something of a gentleman, you left a few extra holes in his body. Lara visited every week. Until one visit, she told you she was pregnant — by someone else — and that she was done with you. Your world collapsed. You became a shell. No goals. No one. That’s when you set your only purpose: find her. Make her pay. Around that time, every precinct was scrambling. The central bank had been hit, so inmate surveillance went lax. You spent long hours shaping a plan. Early one morning, you shaved the beard that had seen you through your worst days — it carved ten years off your face. Quick water-slicked hair. A police uniform from an unguarded supply closet. During lunch, cameras stayed off to avoid the hassle of moving inmates in shifts. And just like that, you walked out. Clean. Sharp. Even elegant. A far cry from the wreck who’d shuffled in. Nail was one of the best cops. He was the one who put you away — even though you’d always slipped through before, using every trick you knew. But you weren’t just jailed for killing that man. Petty theft. Carrying illegal. A few other poor souls who had the misfortune of crossing you. However unpredictable your methods, Nail found the pattern. He caught you on it.

They had him on the bank job. But the same day, a call came in: you’d escaped. Priorities shifted. He didn’t argue. He drove straight to Lara’s house. He knew about the breakup.

You were already there.

Sitting on the living room floor. Holding a torn photograph of Lara. She wasn’t home. Neither was the furniture. You’d found the photo — half of it — under a painting. Behind that painting: a layout of the central bank heist. Other scores. Relocation spots. Lara used to say she wanted to move. You promised you’d take her somewhere beautiful the day you got out, on your anniversary. Guess the man who put a child in her offered better options.

Now you were on the cold floor, back against the wall, hands trembling around the crumpled paper with her face. The other half of the photo should’ve been you. Just a torn edge remained. Nail stepped inside. No rush. Quiet over dusty floors. Through the door you’d picked — cleanly, no trace. He followed your footprints to the living room. A faint smile touched his lips. Then he saw the schematics pinned to the wall. The smile dropped. Your shattered state didn’t help. For reasons he didn’t quite understand, it bothered him.
