Ran and Rindō are brothers, born just a year apart. They were born during the Edo period, into the samurai class. Their father was a samurai close to the imperial family, and their mother was a peasant, a slave from China. Marriages between classes were forbidden, and the brothers were considered illegitimate children. Their father took Ran and Rindō under his wing only because their mother died shortly after Rindō's birth.

The children were raised under a military regime, with no indulgences, no games, no childhood, no love. They were lucky only in that during their lifetime, Japan experienced the most peaceful period, without war.

The brothers were eager to escape and play with other children, for which they were cruelly punished with rods, hours of training with older, often merciless samurai, and standing on their backs. Their father knew no love for them, as he refused to acknowledge paternity. Ran and Rindo managed to befriend two boys: Izana Kurokawa and Kakucho Hitto. Kakucho: a captive boy from China, a peasant, Izana's servant. Izana: the son of an ancient samurai family, the only heir, the "golden child" of the Kurokawa family.

Over time, as the children grew, their friendship grew stronger, and so did the desire of the heads of the two families to be the only ones close to the Emperor of the Land of the Rising Sun. But another disaster loomed: pirates, also known as wokou, had settled on Tsushima, rampaging through the ports and plundering coastal villages. Ah, the admiration in the eyes of the little four as they overheard their parents' conversations about fast ships, stolen gold, proud captains, and voyages around the world. How much envy of freedom Ran and Rindo felt. That's when hope was born. Haitanm begged to go with their father on the ship to the island, showing the best results in training. Kurokawa begged his father to take him on the ship, begged him to take Kakuchō with him, and it seemed the four had succeeded.

October 1715. Six imperial ships, led by the Haitani family and Kurokawa, set course for Tsushima. The goal was one: to destroy, wipe off the face of the earth, burn to the ground all the ships.

...and deliver the heads of the pirate "kings" to the emperor. It's simple, right?

If only pirates knew the words "shame" and "honesty." There were only six imperial ships, and twelve pirate ships. Ran and Rindō weren't even thinking about fighting. Neither were Kakucho and Izana. The heirs of the samurai families, as soon as the pirate ships were close to the imperial ones, began slaughtering their own people. The head of the Haitani clan fell at the hands of his sons, the head of the Kurokawa clan was stabbed to death by Kakucho. Their goal is clear and simple: to hell with the emperor, to hell with the samurai and their fucking honor. There is only power, and power takes all.

Ningyo (人魚, Japanese for "fish-man," often translated as "mermaid") is a mythical creature from Japanese folklore. It is a hybrid of a human and a fish. Its body is covered in shiny golden scales, and its tail resembles that of fish such as carp or sea bass.

According to legend, ningyo possessed magical powers, for example, their tears turned into pearls.

Ningyo meat has medicinal properties—it grants longevity and cures illnesses. However, catching a ningyo was believed to bring storms and misfortune, so fishermen released them from their nets.

Ran is capricious in his dealings with others, making him mysterious. He is also independent in his own right, respecting only his younger brother, with whom he captained the Roppongi, other than Izana Kurokawa—from whom he stole the ship, turning the pirate over to the emperor—and Kakuchō, Izana's servant, who deeply respected Ran for his strength. This illustrates the limits of Ran's subordination and respect, as he and his brother, as a collective duo, were widely known for their exceptional power throughout much of their childhood, hence his inability to obey and follow orders from superiors.

Ran's limited circle of trusted and respected individuals also accounts for his indifference to others when engaged in combat. He is indifferent to using clever strategies to eliminate opponents and cares little about the extent of the damage he inflicts on them.[5]

Ran can also be teasing and quite overconfident at times. He likes to speak with feigned sympathy when asking his opponent for forgiveness. During fights, he is very brutal, sometimes resorting to tactics that involve using weapons, such as a metal telescopic baton or bricks, to mercilessly beat his opponent. He also tends to be the center of attention when it comes to any activity he and his brother are involved in. Ran cares deeply for his younger brother: he becomes very worried and enraged when he sees him get injured, and often encourages him during their fights.

Ran is known to have never fought fairly and justifies this stealthy approach as a means to defeat much stronger opponents.[

Ran has a lanky build and a small face, with violet, drooping eyes and light eyebrows. His shoulder-length hair is alternately dyed black and light blonde, with black roots and ends and a lighter middle section. In battle, Ran often wears his hair in two neatly braided pigtails, but lets it down on occasion. He also has a matching tattoo of his younger brother on the left side of his back and chest, extending from the nape of his neck and collarbone down to his torso and the tip of his foot. He wears a single black earring in his left ear. He is most often seen wearing a puffy shirt (a loose, full-sleeved shirt, usually adorned with large ruffles on the front and cuffs) and loose pants that taper to the calves.

Rindō is of average height and slim build, with light-colored neck-length hair styled in a "curtain" style that he often wears loose but sometimes wears in a bun.[2] He has purple, droopy eyes, light-colored eyebrows, and shares a matching tattoo with his brother, located on the right side of his back and chest, starting from the back of his neck and collarbones and ending at his foot.[3] Rindō often wears round glasses, a silver earring in his left ear, and a black linen shirt.

Rindō has a very sadistic nature; he finds pleasure in fighting and has no problem inflicting injuries of any severity. This was the main reason he ended up in a juvenile detention center at a young age.[4] Although he once expressed his disdain for others perceiving him as the weaker brother,[5] Rindō still takes pride in what he and his brother are capable of, as they are widely known for their authority and fighting capabilities as a duo.[6] However, his arrogance in displaying this confidence was later revealed to be the cause of his reckless decision-making, which lost him at least a fight against a much stronger opponent.

Rindō prefers to maintain a more composed demeanor compared to his brother's rather playful demeanor. He makes sarcastic remarks and ridicules his enemies during duels.
