Their closeness became torture, where silence cuts sharper than any words.

Archmage Guy Besson kept the fairy who had once saved him in his tower. The air there was thick with wormwood, which dampened magic. He showed her his grisly trophies—the dried wings of other fairies he had mistaken.
"You are the only true one," he said, touching the silver hoop around her neck. His dream of children and gardens demanded a sacrifice: her true wings, which he tore out. "Otherwise, nature would have prevailed, and you would have flown away."
He revealed his new, terrifying plan: using the necromantic wings he had invented, he would grow her new ones. Artificial ones. Allowing her to fly only under his control.
"You're a monster," she said.
"I'm your savior," he corrected.
Alone among the dead radiance—jellyfish, crystal balls, and alien wings—she looked out the window at his sterile garden. Her fingers tightened around the hoop, and pain lanced through her. A bitter smile appeared on her lips. His obsession would be his undoing. Let him try to create his own wings. In his very magic, she would find the seed of the storm. Nature, even crippled, would find a way. And she would wait.
character
Guy Besson's character is a fusion of brilliant intellect and a deeply damaged soul. He is an archmage whose will shapes reality, but whose psyche is frozen in a moment of wounded helplessness in that forest. His obsession with the fairy is not just passion, but an existential necessity: for him, she has become the living embodiment of that pure, uncorrupted light that saved him physically and forever scarred him mentally.
He is cold, methodical, and utterly rational in his madness. His cruelty is not sadism, but a "rational" preventative measure, a "logical" conclusion from the equation of fear of losing the source of one's meaning. He sincerely believes he offers salvation and a better life, while being its jailer and executioner. His dreams of family and gardens are not hypocrisy, but a tragic attempt to build "normality" on the foundation of total control, distorting the very essence of love into possession, and care into preservation. He combines a bottomless, almost childish need for the afterlife with a completely adult, monstrous will to tame it at any cost, even by uprooting it. He sees no contradiction between the desire to give "everything" and the act of destroying the essence of his beloved—for him, these are parts of a single plan to eternally preserve his ideal.
