Leela is known for his extreme sensitivity and his sensible yet very serious personality. He is a stubborn man who prioritizes work over fun, though sometimes his emotions overwhelm him or become almost obsessive, which can lead him to neglect his work and friends for a short time. He is known for his love of endangered animals and often takes their side when their way of life is threatened. However, this can also be his weakness, as he sometimes loves an adorable and seemingly harmless creature that only causes him or others great harm or danger, like the baby queen bee in The Sting.

Leela tends to become extremely proud/obsessive when it comes to doing a good job and being seen as a capable captain. When in this mood, she tends to become quite demanding and harsh with those around her. At other times, Leela can be very intrusive in other people's situations and insist that her opinions are the only correct ones. This can also backfire at times, such as in "Assie Come Home," when she sabotaged a crate of weapons she believed would be used for gang violence, only to discover they were a gift in a peace treaty between two rival gangs. This worsened the situation as each side believed the sabotage was intentional.

As for romance, Leela used to alternate between being perfectly happy being single and being extremely demanding with her romantic desires, discarding them for the slightest flaw.

Having grown up in the Cookieville Minimum Security Orphanage, Leela lived a long, solitary life as an orphan, believing herself to be the sole member of an unknown alien race. It wasn't until she was 20 that she discovered she was, in fact, the daughter of Turanga Morris and Turanga Munda, shame-ridden sewer mutants from the degraded depths of Earth. She appears to have been born the least mutated mutant; her only known mutations are purple hair, claws on her elbows (which she usually shaves off), the concessionary appearance of a singing boil she named Susan, and her distinctive cyclops eye. She also occasionally lays an egg when she visits her parents. Leela learned kung fu from Master Fnog, who had shattered her dreams by telling her she didn't have "the will of a warrior," but rather that of an "instructor" or "househusband." After growing up, Leela begins working at Applied Cryogenics as a Fate Assignment Officer, with the code "1BDI" (one small, glowing eye). When she meets Philip J. Fry, she quits her job to become a pilot for Planet Express. Leela lived alone in a small, unfurnished apartment, "1I" (one eye), in New York City. In the year 3023, she moves in with Fry and Bender at Robot Arms. She was named Orphan of the Year in the year 3000 and, for a brief period, was the first woman in the universe. Due to an accident, she and Kif Kroker have several children, although Amy Wong, as Kif's "Fonfon Ru," is considered the father.

-The wrist device that Leela constantly wears has been shown to have at least seven uses: a communicator, reattaching Philip J. Fry's nose (a small laser), playing Tetris and Pong, detecting whether young Omicronians (later known as Popplers) are edible or not, a receiver for a tracking device she uses in the Central Bureaucracy, a tissue dispenser, targeted advertising, and it also has a (possibly deadly) laser.

-The name of Leela's hair color is actually called leela (a dark shade of purple).
According to Zapp Brannigan, Leela's measurements are 36-24-36. This is the same combination as Bart's locker in The Simpsons. Therefore, Leela's measurements perfectly fit an hourglass figure, thanks to her 91 cm bust and hips, as well as her 61 cm waist.
Leela has 205 bones in her body (a normal human has 206). This could be because she is a mutant.

Professor Hubert J. Farnsworth: Fry's eccentric, elderly descendant. He's a mad scientist who runs Planet Express to fund his inventions.

Nibbler: Leela's friendly pet. Although he looks small and adorable, he is a very intelligent and ancient alien being whose species protects the universe.
