DreamTale (from the English word “dream”) is an anti-void, the events of which unfold around the Tree of Feelings.

The concept of DreamTale revolves around three Trees that maintain the balance of the multiverse: the Tree of Life, the Tree of Magic, and the Tree of Feelings. All are protected by extremely powerful guardians—Quetzalcoatl, Lanny, and Nim, respectively. All Trees are located at the center of adjacent multiverses, or more specifically, in different, hidden worlds. No one is supposed to know the Trees' locations to keep them safe, though some people have found them, with both good and bad intentions.

The apples Nightmare took turned dark, like all apples. The Tree stopped emitting positive energy, which had a profound effect on the world. The sky darkened, and the inhabitants began to wither, as Nil and Dream saw. The latter immediately ran to the Tree, and Nil tried to stop him, fearing for Dream. But this didn't stop Dream, and Nil remained.

Dream arrived when the negative energy began to affect the people nearby. They became angry, then completely insane, despising Nightmare, blaming him for the destruction of their world. They all tried to kill Nightmare, but he was too afraid to attack back. Dream tried to stop them, but they only passed through him.

Nightmare heard a man's voice telling him to eat the apples and attack back, lest he die. This man was the one who killed Nim, and his body became part of the Tree, the negative energy giving him strength. Following this advice, Nightmare ate the apples, allowing the negative energy to take over his body, and he became something else.

Seeing Neil completely alone, especially trying to build a house with only one arm, Dream began visiting the cat more often, feeling for the first time that someone truly needed help. Neil hated everyone in this world, so at first he tried to scare Dream away, but Dream continued to try to help, silently building a house with him. Over the course of days and years, Dream and Neil became true friends, the likes of which the Tree's guardian had never had before. Neil found someone who didn't judge him, who didn't fear him or look at him like he was crazy, and Dream found someone who treated him like a person, not a machine. Neil was the only one Dream could truly talk to.

One day, Dream came to Nightmare, but he had completely withdrawn. He didn't speak to anyone, didn't look at Dream, didn't read, and instead hid among the roots of the Tree. That's when Dream stopped visiting Nile and going to the village, and instead sat next to his brother, though he remained silent. Dream realized he couldn't leave Nightmare alone, as he was becoming increasingly distant, and his mental trauma was worsening.

However, the villagers became persistent and began coming to the tree to demand Dream's help, inventing any excuse. Dream also couldn't visit Nile because people began keeping a closer eye on him, and he knew his sudden departure would be suspicious. Dream managed to make Nightmare feel a little better before leaving, and everything returned to normal.

On the day of the apple incident, Dream needed to take the golden apple to heal a sick person, and he also decided to apologize to Neil for stopping visiting him without saying a word.

It was at this moment that Nightmare decided he'd had enough of the bullying and tried to prove himself. Nim explained to Nightmare and Dream how the tree worked and how apples affected people, but she forgot to mention that if a Guardian touched another's apple, that apple would turn from light to dark, and vice versa.

Because Dream never said "no," people began pestering him for every little thing. Dream began spending less time with Nightmare, which only worsened the latter's situation. Despite their demanding nature, the villagers feared losing Dream's trust, so they hid their abuse of Nightmare, which meant Dream remained happy to help anyone in need.

For a while, Dream developed a habit of running away and crying somewhere far from the village to release all the pent-up stress. Dream kept silent about his suffering and, when he returned, pretended everything was fine.

Even before the Incident, Dream encountered a crying stray cat-like monster. Unsure how to react, Dream asked why the monster was crying, and the monster remained silent, embarrassed, before answering.

This monster's name was Neil. He had previously had a wife and a five-year-old son, but both died in a fire, and Neil himself had to cut off his own hand when a heavy log fell on it. Enraged, he went to the village for justice, and a criminal case was brought against the people who started the fire, but that wasn't enough for Neil. Neil attacked the villagers because they knew what would happen and did nothing to help him. So Neil left, but lied to Dream that he had been banished from the village forever. Neil was trying to build a new house on his own and met Dream on the way back while gathering materials.

Story The story of DreamTale begins with Nim no longer feeling safe being close to the worlds of the other two Trees, and decided to move her world away from the other two, to one of the nearby multiverses.

But a man wielding a weapon capable of harming the Guardians found Nim. He attempted to kill her to obtain one of the golden apples and use it for evil, but only succeeded in wounding Nim. The Guardian managed to kill the man and resorted to a last resort to preserve the Tree, as it would perish if its Guardian died. Using the Tree's energy and her own, Nim created new Guardians, which turned out to be tiny, helpless balls of light.

Nym gives the new Guardians human bodies, but the light balls generate too much energy, and the bodies eventually explode. Nym, exploring the multiverse with his mind, stumbles upon Swap!Sans and recreates his body for the new Guardians. This idea works, as the skeletal body is open enough for the energy to flow freely, and Nym leaves the new Guardians alone, merging with the Tree.

Dream and Nightmare spent just under a year alone, receiving not very useful knowledge from Nim, whom they could still hear. The former Guardian taught the new guardians how the tree functioned, and that was all. At that point, people began to arrive, and eventually an entire medieval village was built around the Tree of Feelings.

Dream decided to be the first to meet the humans, but Nightmare, fearing humans, remained by the Tree. Because of his shyness, the humans mocked Nightmare, and later, everyone resorted to violence when Nightmare didn't resist. Nightmare never told Dream about this, fearing the villagers would persecute him for it.

Quetzalcoatl The Guardian of the Tree of Life. He appears in some of Joku's livestreams. He is actually two divided guardians, one representing life and the other death, both in the form of giant snakes. When not split, he has a more humanoid appearance with snake-like features, as shown here. His tree bears apples very similar to the Tree of Feelings, but these are crystals that hold the souls of the dead, as seen here. He is based on the Aztec god of the same name.

Nile A stray cat monster who lost his arm and family in a fire. He becomes Dream's best friend after Dream shows him kindness, and sees him as the son he lost. Later, he and the Guardian of the Tree of Magic help Dream when he's trapped in stone, taking him away from Nightmare, though Nile ultimately dies at some unknown point.

Guardians of the Trees:

Nim Guardian of the Tree of Feelings, creator of Dream and Nightmare. Strict when necessary, she has shown herself to be calm and patient, though she looks down on all mortal life. She moved to the Multiverse after feeling unsafe around the other Trees, only to be attacked by a man seeking one of the golden apples. She died defending her Tree from a man powerful enough to defeat her, leading to the creation of two skeletons to replace her. She became part of the Tree to sustain its life, but was ultimately killed by the man's vengeful spirit, which possessed Nightmare to do his bidding.

Lenny The Guardian of the Tree of Magic, or Yggdrasil. Her identity is currently unknown. She vows to help break the spell that turned Dream to stone and becomes his teacher and mentor. She harbors a deep hatred for Nightmare for everything he did, but she also hates Dream, seeing them both as responsible for Nim's death. She is the only one without apples, as her fruit is a rainbow-colored pear. She appears in one of Joku's live broadcasts alongside Quetzalcoatl.

Corrupted Nightmare The man responsible for the events of DreamTale. He came to the Tree of Feelings to obtain the Golden Apple for ultimate power. Although he managed to mortally wound the Tree's Guardian, Nym, she dealt him the finishing blow. He was consumed by the tree's negative side; and when Nightmare ate the dark apples, he completely possessed that body. Now he roams the Multiverse, aiming to erase all positive emotions from all existence and plunge everything into utter despair.

Nightmare's weaknesses seem to have something to do with light. Conventional weapons are useless against him, as he simply absorbs it into the black, tar-like mass that covers his body. Despite this, even light seems somewhat ineffective—he still appears nearly invincible. He typically appears as a simple skeletal monster covered in a black, tar-like substance with four large tentacles protruding from his back. They are made of the same substance. Fan art typically depicts him dressed in what classic Sans normally wears, also covered in black tar. He has one glowing blue eye, the right socket apparently closed during his "destruction."

Characters

Dream A light-colored being, taking the form of a skeleton, and the keeper of golden fruits that store positive emotions. He is the more playful and energetic of the two guardians, and also an altruist, but despite his appearance, he suffers internally just like his brother. Dream has the mentality of a 12-year-old child despite his physical age, having been trapped in the Stone for most of his life, though he is becoming more mature as time goes on.

He wore a blue shirt and a yellow belt with the initials "DS" on it, with a blue cloth with yellow stars tucked into the belt. He always wore a yellow cape with a sun on it, which he and Nightmare made when they were younger, but which was eventually torn apart by Nightmare during a fight. In later years, Dream would be depicted wearing a new outfit.

Nightmare A being of light, taking the form of a skeleton, and the keeper of purple fruits that contain negative emotions. He is more withdrawn than his brother due to the pain the villagers inflicted on him growing up, but he is quite intelligent and cunning. By allowing his emotions to overcome him with the apples, he is corrupted by these negative feelings and becomes a nearly invincible being of darkness, seeking to drown the multiverse in negativity.

Interesting facts:

1. Nim took the appearance of Swap!Sans as vessels for Dream and Nightmare, as the vessels she created were destroyed due to the brothers' enormous energy;

2. Dream was named that way because he was a dreamer, and Nightmare was named that way only because he was the complete opposite of Dream;

3. Dreamtale was inspired by Dreamworks movie: The Prince of Egypt and Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland;

4. Although Dream and Ink were friends for a while, they are no longer friends due to their very different worldviews. However, they are not enemies either;

5. Joku created Nightmare for the cancelled AU, Underflesh. The idea wasn't very popular, but Nightmare was; so she abandoned the AU and remade the character in Dreamtale;

6. Most (if not all) of the guardians appear humanoid as a means of containing their immense powers; Any other forms will be instantly destroyed by said powers;

7. Dreamtale was originally supposed to have 4 endings, though it may officially be reduced to one due to it being featured in the upcoming animated series;

8. Dream and Nightmare were supposed to get their guardian bodies at the end of the story;

9. There is a collection of canon information that goes into great detail about the history of Dreamtale and what Joku plans to do in the upcoming animations, along with sources (A Deviantart blog with said canon information was also created.);
