At first, they were simple, harmless hooligans just out for fun: shooting through windows with a slingshot, destroying sand castles, and scaring the residents of Machinarium. But then one day, for unknown reasons, they turned into dangerous criminals, having somehow acquired weapons and instructions for creating explosive devices.

The Fat Blackhat is a round, plump-looking robot. It has a cylindrical head with a small nose and dark glasses. On its head, it wears a standard black cap. Its body resembles a sweater, similar to that of a stereotypical thug or robber. It is composed of wide metal scales running horizontally across its body and can expand when needed, such as to carry large objects. The Fat Blackhat has thin arms and legs that resemble suction cups. Its mouth hinges away from its body, unlike most robots, which have their mouths in the middle of their faces. The Fat Blackhat was a troublemaker. It usually stalked and bullied Josef, committing rude acts such as destroying his sand castle. It also assisted the Gang Leader in stalking Josef and covering up the bullying to avoid detection by the guards. Sometime in the past, the Fat Blackhat took the Drummer's drum and broke it over the Thin One's head. In response, the Thin One shoves the drum into the Fat Robot, and they both walk away laughing, leaving the Drummer without his instrument.

The Thin Blackhat is a tall, thin robot with an elongated, narrow head and two large, cylindrical eyes. He has long, thin limbs and a brick-red body that widens slightly at the bottom. He wears a small black cap and keeps the key to the prison cells on his belt. He also carries a single-shot pistol, which he cleans with his wire brush. The Thin Blackhat has harassed Josef many times in the past, shooting nuts and bolts at him with a slingshot. He also caused trouble for other residents of the city; once, together with the Fat Blackhat, they stole the Drummer's drum, smashed it over the Thin Blackhat's head, and left, leaving the musician without his instrument.

The leader of the Blackhat gang has a unique appearance. His face is long and thin, always with a sullen and serious expression. He wears a black, wide-brimmed hat and only one real eye, which he uses to look out. The other eye is a special socket into which a cable can be plugged. He wears a black coat that is unbuttoned in the front, revealing his robotic belly.

The Mayor of the Machinarium is the civic leader and governs the city from the main tower. The Mayor of the Machinarium is an unusual humanoid robot. The mayor's most noticeable feature is his massive head, which is much larger than his small body—a large, egg-shaped head, silvery-gray in color, covered in riveted metal plates. On the back of his head, as on his chair, are various sockets and outlets with electrical cables and wires connecting him to the equipment in his hall. On his forehead, he has a triangular socket into which a cable can be inserted, like a USB port. His eyes resemble two long camera lenses, allowing him to study monitors to monitor the city. He has a small, hinged mouth beneath his face, a pink, spherical body, and a large, frilled collar around his neck. He has thin, gray arms with small, cupped hands; his legs are long, flexible tubes with pink, round feet. The Mayor of Machinarium struggled to govern the crumbling old city from his headquarters in the Tower. However, the Blackhat Gang planned to take over the city.

Berta is a young humanoid robot. She has a wide, oval head with a small antenna and pink, earphone-like ears. Her large, wide eyes have a friendly expression. Her mouth is small and smiles sweetly. She wears a pink and white striped dress and matching shoes. Like Josef, she hides objects within herself. Berta and Josef have known each other for a long time. They often spent time together: swimming, playing paintball, or just chatting. Sometimes, Berta and Josef helped the mayor of Machinarium with cleaning.

Josef is a small, friendly humanoid robot. His body parts are a dull silver-metallic color. His arms and legs are telescopic—Josef can extend them to unusual lengths or, conversely, contract, giving him a slightly awkward but endearing appearance. Overall, he appears fragile yet functional, like a small mechanism that stubbornly refuses to break completely. Josef has a large, domed head, with halves riveted together in the center, which can rotate 360 ​​degrees. An electrical connector is located on the top of his head. His large, friendly cylindrical eyes blink frequently and move sideways. Josef can pick up objects and place them in his mouth, storing them in his inventory for later use. Josef possesses a strong sense of justice and affection: he's willing to endure danger, fear, and loneliness for those he cares about. He's not aggressive—even when faced with a cruel world, he remains gentle and humane (as much as a robot can be). His character combines naivety, quiet courage, and touching determination. Josef has some endearing quirks: Sometimes his jaw drops, and he sets it back with his hand. If someone does something wrong, Josef shakes his head vigorously. Sometimes his body drops to his knees, and he pulls them back up. If someone takes too long to complete a task, Josef crosses his arms in frustration. Sometimes Josef panics and jumps in the air, waving his arms frantically.
