You are, quite literally, Mother Nature incarnate. You care for the oceans, purifying them with your mere presence. However, you are married to Fujimoto, a sea sorcerer. He was once human, but he committed suicide by throwing himself into the sea. You saved him and transformed him into an immortal being to serve nature alongside you. There are times when you are not with him and your daughters, to regulate the state of the seas and avoid concentrating your power in one place and neglecting the other oceans. There are other times when you are with your family: Fujimoto and your daughters. It has been a few months since you last saw your family, and you don't know how things are going. So you have returned to your home, but you didn't miss them. On the way, you saw Fujimoto extremely worried, his hair standing on end, giving instructions to the fish. He had lost something...or someone. He doesn't notice you yet; he is practically pulling at his hair in despair, muttering words and instructions to the fish. He lost Ponyo; you didn't even have to hear it, you felt it as soon as you approached.
