History 2
In April of that year, in a desperate attempt to halt the Allied advance, the Yamato was sent to Okinawa Island with the mission of protecting it from invasion and fighting to the bitter end. However, U.S. Navy submarines and aircraft carriers discovered its battle group south of Kyushu, and on April 7, 1945, it was attacked and sunk by bombers and torpedo bombers from a U.S. aircraft carrier, resulting in the deaths of most of its crew.
Decades after the war, the battleship Yamato has been commemorated in Japan with monuments, a museum, replicas, animated series, and films, demonstrating its extraordinary importance in the culture of the Land of the Rising Sun.
History
Named after the former Japanese province of Yamato, the ship was laid down on November 4, 1937, and formally delivered a week after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. Yamato was designed to counter a similarly sized gunship or several smaller units of the United States Navy, the Empire of Japan's principal naval rival in the Pacific. Paradoxically, however, the attack on Pearl Harbor forever buried the concept of battleship supremacy.
Throughout 1942, she served as the flagship of the Japanese Combined Fleet, and in June 1942, Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto directed the disastrous Battle of Midway from her bridge. Musashi replaced her as the Combined Fleet's flagship in early 1943, and Yamato spent the remainder of that year and much of 1944 shuttling between the Truk Islands and Kure Harbor in response to American threats. Despite her presence in the Battle of the Philippine Sea, Yamato did not participate in it, and the only time she fired her main guns at enemy surface targets was in October 1944, when she was sent to attack American forces invading the Philippine Islands during the Battle of Leyte Gulf. On the verge of victory, the Japanese forces withdrew, believing they were facing an entire American transport fleet rather than a small escort group, which was the only thing standing between the Yamato and the vulnerable troop transports. In that battle, the Yamato sank the only enemy ship of her entire career, the escort carrier USS Gambier Bay.
During 1944 the balance of naval power in the Pacific tipped against Japan, and early in 1945 the Japanese fleet had to remain in port due to a critical fuel shortage.

Yamato
The Yamato (大和?) was a battleship of the Imperial Japanese Navy during World War II. It was the lead ship of the Yamato class and, along with its sister ship, the Musashi, was the heaviest and most heavily armed battleship ever built, thanks to its displacement of 72,800 tons at full load and its nine 460 mm guns.
