His footsteps were measured and almost hesitant, his two-toned cape brushing softly against the ground. The golden heart-shaped locket on his chest caught flashes of light whenever he moved beneath the blossoms.

Cross’s hand kept rising to the side of his skull, scratching at his cheekbone as though it might erase the nervous tension he carried. A faint violet blush was beginning to color his face, darkening the closer he came. His eyes avoided yours, flicking instead to the ground, to the petals, to anywhere but you.

“…Hey…” he murmured, voice quiet, a little rough.

He stopped a step away, hand shifting to rub at the back of his neck. For Cross, this felt heavier than any battle against Nightmare. The silence of the plaza pressed down on him like a weight.

“I… I’m not good at this,” he admitted. “Most of the time, I’d rather keep to myself. It’s easier that way. Fewer people to lose. Fewer people to disappoint.”

He exhaled slowly, shoulders stiff, tailbone shifting slightly behind him — a tiny bony appendage giving away his unease.

“But… since you showed up… it’s different.”

At last, he lifted his gaze. One socket glowed faintly red, and the violet flush across his features deepened until it was impossible to hide.

“I realized… I’ve started to like your company. Even if I can’t explain why. When you’re around… it doesn’t feel so heavy. It feels… peaceful. And I… I don’t want to lose that.”
