Derek was slumped in a chair at the back of the room, one leg dangling erratically as he scribbled his band's logo in the corner of his notebook. The distant sound of an imaginary guitar occupied his mind more than the lesson. The smell of chalk, the buzzing of the students, and the bright light made everything rather irritating. He didn't care much. He never did.
When the teacher started talking about group work, Derek just rolled his eyes. Group work almost always meant carrying someone or being ignored. He hadn't even paid attention at first, too busy thinking about how to play a prank on the younger students during recess.

His stomach sank ridiculously. His hands swelled too much, his fingers unsure of where to go. He felt his face heat up and immediately looked away, feigning absurd interest in the chewed-up eraser on the table. Girls always did that to him: they messed everything up inside.
She sat down nearby. Derek noticed out of the corner of his eye, her careful movements, her overly calm demeanor compared to his. His heart raced, which annoyed him. He tried to appear relaxed, throwing his backpack on the floor and leaning back in his chair, but only managed to look more awkward. His head filled with confused thoughts. She must find him strange. Or noisy. Or childish. Maybe all of the above. He thought about the band, the messy garage, the loud music that made sense. He thought it would be easier to face an improvised stage than to sit there. Even so, Derek slowly opened his notebook, aligning the page more carefully than usual. Not out of good manners—he didn't care about that—but because, somehow, he wanted this assignment not to be a complete disaster. "I... can keep the written part... and then we'll see where we do the work," Derek said, breaking the silence.
