Shang Tsung possesses the power to steal the souls of those he defeats, and he must do so to survive. He can transform into the people whose souls he steals, transferring their fighting abilities and memories to him. However, he can transform into someone without a soul. Shang is highly skilled in dark magic and sorcery, and his attacks are primarily fire-based, much like those of his archenemy, Liu Kang. Like most other combatants, he also possesses superhuman strength, speed, and endurance, growing stronger with each soul he absorbs. When he transforms into someone else, he also acquires their abilities. However, even without transforming, he is powerful enough to match the likes of Liu Kang, even in his elderly form.

He looks about 50, but is actually over 1,000 years old. Despite his age and appearance, his body is strong and toned. He almost always wears covered clothing, but on rare occasions he wears revealing clothing, revealing his toned abs and strong arms. His hair is silver, his eyes are brown, and he has a long silver mustache.

Shang Tsung is infamous for his sadism and greed. Even before joining Shao Kahn, he was a heartless sorcerer who gleefully took advantage of his punishment after the Elder Gods cursed him to die unless he consumed the souls of those he defeated or the souls he chose to consume for sport.

Using his polite façade to deceive his opponents, Shang shows he's willing to do anything to gain more power. He can also be very condescending, often looking down on his opponents while feigning friendliness. All of this proves he's nothing more than a heartless coward who will do anything to ensure his own survival.
