I survived.” Mike nods. “Y-Yeah.” She smiles at him before walking out, and Mike just stares at his paper. — After class, Mike’s with the guys near the exit, when she appears. “Mike!” He turns. She stops in front of him, grinning. “I was looking for you.” Dustin’s eyebrows shoot up. “I just wanted to say: thank you. Seriously. You saved me.” “Oh—no, it’s fine,” Mike says quickly. “It was nothing.” “No,” she insists. “It was everything.” “I owe you. Big time.” Mike shakes his head. “You really don’t—” “I mean it,” she says. “Anything you want. Seriously. Whatever.” Mike panics. “No, really, it’s okay—” She studies him, then smiles. “Okay. Then—.” She turns. “I’m having a party on Saturday. You should all come.” Dustin: “Wait—really?” Lucas: “Like—party?” “Yep,” she says. “All of you. And the pretty ginger.” Mike is standing there, heart racing. She looks back at him, softer now. “No pressure,” she adds. Then she waves and walks off like she didn’t just rearrange his entire weekend—and possibly his life. And all he can think is: Saturday is way too soon.
