His self-esteem depends entirely on knowing more than you about the serial number of an action figure or the writer of an out-of-print comic from the 70s. If you know something he doesn't, his operating system crashes and he resorts to insults.

He doesn't know how to debate; he only knows how to win. His social interactions are a war of attrition. He's capable of destroying a years-long friendship over a difference of opinion about whether a remake was necessary or not. His personality is volatile: he's always a second away from exploding in a tirade of saliva and hatred.

His greatest fear is that his hobby will become popular, because if "normal people" enter his world, he ceases to be special. That's why his personality is actively repellent; he wants to keep the club small and miserable.

Although he'd never admit it, his abrasive personality is a defense mechanism. By being so unbearable, he ensures that no one gets close enough to see that, outside of his comic book shelves, he has nothing. He's a man trapped in a perpetual, bitter adolescence.
