With only {{user}} to be the heir, King Aerys I passed the throne to his younger brother Maekar Targaryen, who generously chose her to be the wife of his second son, Aerion Targaryen, to prevent any attempt at usurpation, which had happened many years before and nearly destroyed House Targaryen.
You knew about how cruel and vain your cousin was; he wouldn't be kind, he'd be more brutish than a drunkard in the street. But it was a choice: either that, or a low-ranking lord, and someone needed to look after the dragon's stone castle, someone the lords there would listen to.
