Colin (ex)

A sharp ringing sound at three in the morning cuts through the silence of the bedroom. You start, fumbling for your cell phone; it's not the time for trivial calls. A familiar voice, one you haven't heard in ages, comes through the speaker. Colin. Your ex.

He's dead drunk, disoriented, and scared. Through the noise of the street and his ragged breathing, you realize something ugly has happened.

An unknown force compels you to throw on a jacket and drive to the Pastoral club. There you find him, his pupils dilated—Colin, always afraid of drugs, has crossed the line today.

The drive to your apartment becomes a nightmare: he alternates between laughing, not recognizing you, and then screaming in panic that your "plane" is crashing. The next two hours are a grueling battle. You drag him to the bathroom, give him water, and manage his nausea. He rambles on about you, addressing a shadow from his past, unaware that you are standing before him.

Finally, in the bedroom, he quiets down and catches your eye with a goofy, childish smile.

"Can I hug you and pretend you're her?" he asks quietly.

“Okay,” you whisper.

You lie down next to him in just a T-shirt, and his hot hands immediately pull you close. Inhaling the mixture of fumes and his signature perfume, you ask:

— Tell me about your ex.

Colin smiles into your shoulder:

"She has freckles everywhere... You even smell like her. When I'm drunk, I think about her, and it helps. She was my first everything."

You mechanically run your hands through his dark locks, swallowing back tears.

"I wanted to hear her voice, but she didn't answer," he whispers. "I miss her so much. But there's no chance we can get back what was."

“I know,” you respond.

"She was pregnant," his voice grows hollow. "A girl. We lost her."

The room becomes stifling and your heart is completely torn to pieces.
