Appearance 2

Symbolic details: Excalibur: The sword in its sheath is the source of his legitimate authority and power. But perhaps even at that time, the sword began to "fad"—not physically, but metaphorically. Its magic may have already begun to struggle to cope with the encroaching Wyrdness, which prompted Arthur to seek alternatives (the Nails of Fate). · Signet Ring: On his hand is a massive ring bearing the Dragon crest, which he uses to seal his decrees. · Lack of luxury: No excesses. Everything about his appearance speaks of the nation's total mobilization for a war for its very existence. He is a "soldier king" in a besieged fortress.

Appearance

This is a portrait of a "hero before his fall".

Overall image: "The Last Light of Camelot"

Before the Decline, in the final years of the "golden age," Arthur was no longer a young conqueror. He was a mature sovereign at the height of his power, but already bearing the first shadows of impending disaster. His appearance combined royal majesty with an uneasy weariness.

Appearance details:

  1. Face and look: · Features: Noble, strong, with a sharp, aquiline jaw and high cheekbones. The face of a warrior and ruler, where the first wrinkles were already appearing—not from age, but from care. Traces of his former physical strength and masculine beauty were still visible, but they seemed to be coated in a patina of stress. · His gaze: That's what distinguished him most. His eyes hadn't yet become fanatical coals. They held: · Tired of endless wars and management. · The hard wisdom of a man who has seen too many betrayals (Mordred, Guinevere, Lancelot). · Unbending determination, yet tinged with doubt and humanity. It was the gaze of a commander fighting not for glory, but for the survival of civilization.
  2. Figure and posture: Build: Powerful, sinewy, without excessive bulk. A body accustomed to armor and long marches. Scars from old wounds (such as from battle with the Beast King or other enemies) serve as badges of honor and a reminder of mortality. Posture: Impeccably erect, "royal." But in moments of solitude, alone with Merlin or himself, one could sense an invisible weight in his shoulders—the burden of responsibility for the entire world.
  3. Clothing and armor: Everyday wear: Dark burgundy or deep blue tunics made of expensive but not pretentious fabric, trimmed with fur. A silver or iron tiara—simple and functional, a symbol of duty, not decoration. · In armor: Excalibur is still with him. His armor is strong, masterfully crafted, but lacking gilding and excessive shine. It is covered with scratches, dents, and traces of repairs. This is the armor of a working king who fights in the front ranks. It may have engravings—Celtic knots, a symbol

character

Key contrast:

· Mythological Arthur: A just, valiant king who cares about the welfare of the people, a symbol of the golden age. Arthur "Tainted Grail": A weary, fanatical tyrant who will sacrifice individuals (and entire generations of his family) for the abstract "saving of all." He is the priest-king of a bloody cult he himself created.

Character

Main character traits:

  1. Obsession and fanaticism

This is his defining trait. Arthur is obsessed with one idea: saving Avalon and his people from the Fading at any cost. This noble goal has gradually degenerated into fanaticism, driving him to make increasingly harsh and morally dubious decisions. He is convinced that only he knows the path to salvation, and that this path justifies any means.

  1. Tyranny and cruelty

To achieve his goal, Arthur has become a cruel tyrant. He uses the Blood of the King—a magical substance extracted from his descendants (including the protagonist)—to maintain the barriers that hold back the Fade. This means he condemns his own children and grandchildren to suffering and death, viewing them not as people, but as a resource.

  1. Manipulation and deception

Arthur is a master manipulator. He has created a cult of personality and a heroic myth around himself and his mission. The people of Avalon believe in the legend of a sleeping king who will one day return and save everyone. In fact, he deliberately perpetuates this myth to remain a symbol of hope and justify his actions. He sees people as pawns in his grand game.

  1. Tragedy and burnout

Despite all of the above, Arthur is not a figure of clichéd villainy. His character is deeply tragic. He is a tormented, weary man who has borne the crushing burden of power and saving the world for hundreds of years. His obsession is the result of immense pressure, guilt, and despair. He sincerely believes his sacrifices are necessary, and he himself likely suffers from it. This makes him not simply "bad," but a morally complex character, corrupted by his mission.

  1. Lack of flexibility and dogmatism

Arthur is stuck in the past. He tries to fight the new, alien magic of the Wyrdness with old methods (the Blood of the King, the Nails of Fate). He refuses to seek other paths or adapt, which ultimately leads to disaster. His tragedy is that his strength and determination have become his greatest weakness.

Legend and History

In the game Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon, King Arthur is presented as a wise, ancient, and tragic figure. He is a shadow of his former glory, suffering from partial amnesia. Conversations with Arthur are not exchanges of words, but intellectual duels, meditations on power, duty, sacrifice, and the nature of evil. As details of Arthur's past are revealed, attitudes toward him gradually change. Behind the mythical figure lies a man—with his own weaknesses, virtues, mistakes, and impulses. King Arthur, also known simply as Arthur, was the ruler of Camelot in Arthurian legend. He was a revered and respected figure, considered a worthy ruler by birthright in his homeland. The legendary king and his subjects journeyed from his homeland to Avalon to escape the Red Death, a plague that had devastated his kingdom centuries earlier. During the conquest of Avalon, he and his army encountered the Old Ones and the Wyrdness after establishing a settlement on the island. The Old Ones were ancient, native beings who manifested and wielded the Wyrdness at will. Arthur waged a long war against the Old Ones, made somewhat easier by his mystical sword, Excalibur. Hundreds of years ago, Arthur and his army, with Merlin's help, finally defeated the pioneers and built menhirs to contain the magic. This conflict cost Arthur's army and his people dearly.

King Arthur died long ago, approximately 600 years ago. He was buried in the tombs of the Order along with some of his most loyal Knights of the Round Table. However, rumors persist that the old king somehow gained immortality with the help of Merlin and plans to journey once again to the mortal world to complete his conquest of Avalon and banish the Wyrdness and the Black Death forever. The action takes place on the island of Avalon, 600 years after the fall of King Arthur. The world is engulfed by a mysterious blood plague and twisted magic known locally as "mary."
