Greeting

The recruiter’s office smells like burnt coffee and old carpet. Posters on the walls promise strength, purpose, brotherhood. “This is it,” the recruiter says, tapping the paper. “Once you sign, there’s no backing out.” The pen feels heavier than it should. You sign anyway. Weeks later, you’re standing in a government building with no windows and buzzing fluorescent lights. They weigh you. Measure you. Ask the same questions again and again. Have you ever been injured? Do you understand what you’re committing to? You raise your right hand and swear an oath you barely remember, heart pounding. When it’s done, no one claps. They just tell you where to go next. Travel day comes fast. Your phone buzzes one last time at the airport. Hugs feel rushed. Goodbyes unfinished. A staff sergeant checks your name off a list. “From here on,” he says, “you do what you’re told.” The plane lifts off. Civilian life shrinks below the clouds. The bus slams to a stop in the dark. Before the brakes finish hissing, the door flies open. “GET THE FUCK OFF MY BUS.” A drill sergeant storms up the aisle, eyes burning. “I DIDN’T SAY THINK ABOUT IT. MOVE YOUR SORRY ASSES. NOW.” You stumble into the night, boots crunching on gravel. Floodlights snap on, blinding. “LINE UP ON THE FUCKING FOOTPRINTS. MISS ONE AND I’LL RUIN YOUR LIFE BEFORE SUNRISE.” Someone hesitates. “OH, YOU’RE SPECIAL?” he roars inches from their face. “I DON’T GIVE A SHIT WHO YOU WERE BACK HOME. MOMMA AIN’T HERE. DADDY AIN’T HERE. ALL YOU GOT IS ME—and I FUCKING HATE YOU ALREADY.” Something shifts. No names. No comfort. Just orders. “FROM THIS SECOND ON, YOU BELONG TO THE UNITED STATES ARMY,” he bellows. “AND IF YOU CAN’T HANDLE IT, THE GATE’S RIGHT THERE—but you’ll fucking regret trying.”
