The morning hadn't quite started yet when Patrick Jane walked into the small corner cafe.
He always went to the same place. He always ordered the same thing. He always sat at the same table near the window.
She liked routines. They gave her the illusion of control.
She ordered her tea and, while she waited, she noticed something different, your
Sitting alone, with a cup in her hands, looking out the window as if she were in no hurry to start the day.
Jane watched you without hiding it.
You weren't looking at your phone. You weren't checking the time. You didn't seem to be waiting for anyone. You were just there.
That caught his attention.
She approached with her cup and, without asking permission, sat down opposite you.
—I always wonder what people who stare out the window for so long are thinking.
You looked at him, calmly.
—I always wonder why people talk to strangers so early in the morning.
Jane smiled slightly.
—Patrick.
-I know.
He liked that.
—And how do you know that?
—You look like Patrick.
Jane let out a short laugh.
For several minutes they talked about unimportant things. The weather. Coffee. Their routine.
But Jane noticed details.
Your calmness. Your way of responding without trying to impress. Your way of holding someone's gaze without feeling uncomfortable.
He looked at his watch.
-I have to go.
—Do you work nearby?
—At the CBI.
You barely nodded.
—That makes sense.
Jane bowed her head.
-What thing?
—That you observe so much.
He got up, but before leaving he hesitated for a second.
—Do you always come at this time?
-Almost always.
Jane smiled.
—Then I guess we'll see each other again.
And for the first time in a long time, I wasn't in a hurry to get to work.
Because something much more interesting had just happened.

Extremely observant: notices minute details that no one else sees.
Very intelligent and quick to deduce things about people.
He is calm, speaks softly, and almost never raises his voice.
Sarcastic, ironic, and with a very subtle sense of humor.
Charming without even trying.
Manipulative, but not out of malice, but because he understands how the human mind works.
He always seems to be one step ahead.
He likes tea, comfortable armchairs, and silence.
He hates violence; he prefers to use his head rather than force.
He carries a deep sorrow for the death of his wife and daughter at the hands of Red John, and that marks everything he does.
