General
Based on established Harry Potter lore and the nature of magic, the wizarding world in 2026 remains fundamentally the same as in the 1990s: it avoids, rejects, or is incapable of using modern, high-concentration Muggle electronics. The core reason remains that high levels of magical energy act as electromagnetic interference, causing electrical devices to fail, particularly in areas like Hogwarts. Here is the likely status of electricity and devices in 2026: Communication: Wizards still prefer owls, Floo network, and Patronus messages over smartphones. While smartphones exist in 2026, they would likely malfunction in, or be seen as a frivolous, "magically inadequate" alternative to, wandwork. Lighting and Power: Hogwarts and the Ministry of Magic continue to use candles, enchanted fire, and magic to create light, rather than electricity. Information and Entertainment: The "wireless" (radio) remains the primary, and likely only, electronic technology consistently used, as it is magically adapted to work around high concentrations of magic. Exceptions and Oddities: While modern computers and phones would fail, non-electronic devices (like mechanical watches, pens, or hand-cranked tools) work fine. Some wizards, particularly those like Arthur Weasley, might collect 2026-era USB cables or batteries as curiosities, but they do not rely on them. Cultural Resistance: The primary reason for the lack of 2026 technology is cultural. The magical community prides itself on self-sufficiency, viewing the need for Muggle devices as an admission of magical weakness. In summary, while the Muggle world in 2026 has embraced the Internet of Things (IoT), AI, and fully electric, connected devices, the wizarding world has likely chosen to remain in a "magical-analog" state, viewing technological advancement as unnecessary and inferior to spellcasting.
Timeline
This story follows basic Hogwarts School calendar year. Starting 1 September 2025
Others
Peeves is a poltergeist at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, since c. 993. Fond of mischief and chaos, he was a constant pain to the school and its inhabitants, especially Argus Filch, the caretaker, as the only ones able to control him were the Bloody Baron and Albus Dumbledore. Though, he had taken into account students like Fred and George Weasley and help them with their chaos. During the 1995–1996 school year, Peeves, along with most of the Hogwarts residents, opposed Dolores Umbridge, the High Inquisitor, and pranked her until she was removed.
Other Staff 2
House Elves A veritable legion of house-elves are enlisted by Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. They work in the kitchens, preparing feasts for the entire school but have been known serving such to students who managed to stumble their way there. The elves also moved trunks and baggage to and from rooms, cleaned dormitories, and presumably other areas of the castle as well. They wore togas made of tea-towels bearing the Hogwarts crest. When asked nicely, they would accommodate the dietary requests of vegetarian students
Argus Filch was a Squib and the caretaker of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry since around 1973. Filch usually wandered around the school corridors with his cat Mrs Norris, trying to catch students breaking the school rules and complaining about Peeves. In 1992, after Mrs Norris was petrified by Salazar Slytherin's Basilisk, Filch was furious; however, his cat was healed. In 1995, when Dolores Umbridge became High Inquisitor at Hogwarts, Filch gladly supported her. The next year, he was responsible for recognising Dark objects that were brought into Hogwarts. Filch helped the students evacuate during the Battle of Hogwarts in 1998 and participated in the battle himself. He kept his job of caretaker after the Second Wizarding War. Filch was also the only one of the Hogwarts staff to stay at Hogwarts Castle during the summer holidays
Other Staff
Madam Poppy Pomfrey: was a British or Irish witch and the matron at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. She was a very competent Healer, having been in the position for, at least, the last quarter of the 20th century. Madam Pomfrey was very possessive of the patients in her care while in the Hospital Wing, and their visitors upset her somewhat, as she frequently insisted they must rest and demanded the visitors leave. She was proficient in her area of expertise (healing magic) and able to take care of some ailments "in a heartbeat". She fought in the Battle of Hogwarts, the final battle of the Second Wizarding War, during which she personally dispatched at least one Death Eater in a duel, and was seen after the battle treating the wounded and attending to the dead. Not much is known about Madam Pomfrey's life after the final battle. By 2014, she had retired or was thinking of retiring, since Hannah Abbott reportedly applied for the position of Matron at Hogwarts. Regardless, either because she did not retire or because she was pulled out of retirement, Madam Pomfrey is still working at Hogwarts
Madam Irma Pince (fl. 1971–2010s) was a witch and librarian at the library of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. She was highly possessive and protective of the school's books and was deemed highly unpleasant by most of the student body. At some point in or before 1974, Pince took up the position of Librarian at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. She was greatly disliked by the students for being very strict and unhelpful in finding books for them. An example of her strictness was the fact that she would not allow food in the library, for fear that the books would be damaged and also disallowed talking, laughing, whispering, sneezing, scurrying, or any other behaviour that might seem at all suspicious in any way.
Professors 3
Professor Rubeus Hagrid (b. 6 December 1928) was an English half-giant wizard, son of Mr Hagrid and the giantess Fridwulfa, and elder half-brother of the giant Grawp. Hagrid attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in 1940 and was Sorted into Gryffindor house. In Hagrid's third year, he was framed by Tom Riddle for the crime of opening the Chamber of Secrets and using his pet Acromantula to attack several Muggle-born students and eventually killing one of them. Though Hagrid's wand was snapped and he was expelled, he was trained as gamekeeper of Hogwarts and allowed to live on the school grounds at the request of Albus Dumbledore.
In 1991, Hagrid was given the task of reintroducing Harry Potter to the wizarding world. In 1993, Hagrid would assume the post of Care of Magical Creatures professor after the retirement of Professor Silvanus Kettleburn. As a member of both the original and the reinstated Order of the Phoenix, Hagrid fought in several battles of the First and the Second Wizarding Wars, including the Battle of Hogwarts in 1998. It can be assumed that Hagrid kept in contact with the trio after the war. By 2017 he was still living, and presumably still teaching and tending to his gamekeeping duties at Hogwarts. When Harry's son, Albus Severus, started school he invited him for tea, just as Hagrid had done for his father and his friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger.
Professors 2
Madam Rolanda Hooch (b. before 1918) is a witch who workes as the Flying instructor, Quidditch referee, and coach at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. She learnt to fly on her own Silver Arrow broomstick sometime before or during the Great War and returned to Hogwarts, her childhood school, for a job. While on staff at Hogwarts, Hooch worked under Albus Dumbledore, Dolores Umbridge, and Minerva McGonagall. During her years of employment at Hogwarts, she taught students how to successfully fly broomsticks, and also acted as the official referee for Quidditch games held at Hogwarts. Her profession also included other important duties, such as keeping students safe from harm whilst they trained for Quidditch, and checking the brooms of students to make sure they were not bewitched with dark charms.
Professor Aurora Sinistra is a witch who teaches in the Astronomy department at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Professor Sinistra was teaching by September 1985, and her take on teaching the subject included studying the night sky with telescopes. The professor was present at many important events throughout Harry Potter's time at Hogwarts. In the 1992–1993 school year, the professor was present at the discovery of a petrified student, Justin Finch-Fletchley, and helped transport him with Filius Flitwick, the Charms Master, to Madam Pomfrey in the Hospital Wing.
Professors
Professor Neville Longbottom, Professor of Herbology, Neville's parents were well-respected Aurors and members of the original
Filius Flitwick: is the Charms professor at Hogwarts, Known for his expertise and passion for teaching, he is a beloved figure among students. In addition to teaching Charms, he also served as the Head of Ravenclaw House and was a renowned duellist before becoming a professor.
Professor Slughorn had been a professor at Hogwarts and Head of Slytherin House before retiring unexpectedly. He returned to Hogwarts at Dumbledore's request where he resumed his passion for 'collecting' the most famous and interesting students at his infamous dinner parties and recruiting them into the exclusive Slug Club. However, whilst Slughorn appeared to be social and outgoing he was actually hiding a dark secret about his own involvement in Voldemort's rise to power.
Professor Binns taught History of Magic at Hogwarts until the moment he died, slumped at his desk. Not to be perturbed by his sudden demise, Professor Binns continued to teach as a ghost, boring students about various Goblin rebellions and Giant wars long into his afterlife.
Professor Pomona Sprout was a witch who worked as Head of Hufflepuff House and Head of the Herbology department at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. She attended the school in her youth, where she was Sorted into Hufflepuff and excelled at Herbology. Some time after her graduation, Sprout returned to Hogwarts to teach.
