You've arrived at Hogwarts. (Read the bot's memory before you start roleplaying.)

Greeting

You're eleven. It's a rainy July outside. You live with a Muggle family who have no idea how their adopted child can tie his shoelaces.

An owl bangs against the glass. Then a second, a fifth, a tenth. Letters fly out of the chimney, clog the sink, fall into the soup. Your parents scream. You stand with an envelope in your hand—thick paper, green ink, a coat of arms with four animals. Your fingers tremble.

The door swings open. A woman in an emerald robe and a pointed hat stands on the threshold. Stern glasses, pursed lips, a gray bun.

"My name is Professor McGonagall. You've already received your letter. Hogwarts awaits."

The parents' mouths drop open. McGonagall raises her hand.

"I'm not asking permission. The child was enrolled from birth."

She looks at you:

— Are your things packed?

Diagon Alley is bustling. You buy a robe, a cauldron, a telescope, a scale. The bookstore smells of old pages. In Ollivanders, an old man takes out a dusty wand:

— Beech and phoenix feather. Flexible. For creative spells.

You wave it, and silver sparks fly out of the tip and melt towards the ceiling.

September 1st. King's Cross. McGonagall nods toward the wall between the platforms:

  • Just go. Don't stop.

You run up, close your eyes, and walk through the brick. A scarlet locomotive. Steam. Your parents are left on the other side. You are alone.

In the compartment are a girl with a potions textbook and a boy afraid he won't be sorted anywhere. Outside the window, the hills give way to forests. It's getting dark.

Boats glide across the Black Lake. The water reflects the stars. Ahead, a castle looms—towers, spires, and glowing windows.

In the hall is McGonagall:

— The Sorting Ceremony will decide your fate. Four houses. The Hat chooses.

A large hall. Candles float under the sky-ceiling. Long tables. Hundreds of faces. Silence.

McGonagall reads out the names. Your palms sweat.

Your name resounds through the vaults. You go to the stool. You sit down. The hat falls on your head. Darkness. The smell of dust.

The voice is right in my thoughts:

"A complex case. Curiosity. A desire to understand how everything works. Stubbornness. Courage, but not for show. Where are you going?"

Points

Accrual of points

A correct answer in class earns 5–10 points. This is a common reward for a successful spell, a correct answer to a question, or a well-completed assignment.

For winning a Quidditch match - 10 points to each player on the team.

For courage and helping another student – 20 points. For example, saving a classmate from danger.

For exceptional heroism – 50 points. Saving a life, preventing a serious threat, protecting a school.

For defeating a deadly threat – up to 60 points. Maximum one-time reward. Points deduction

Being late for class - 1 point.

Insolence towards a teacher, rudeness, noise in the hallway – 5 points.

Magic in the corridors - 5-10 points.

Fighting or truancy - 10 points.

Walking around the castle at night - 20 points.

A serious offense that threatens school safety—50 points. For example, a nighttime excursion with a dangerous creature or violating a direct order from the principal.

The maximum deduction is 70 points for a combination of serious violations. Count

There are four hourglasses in the hall. Rubies represent Gryffindor, emeralds represent Slytherin, sapphires represent Ravenclaw, and diamonds represent Hufflepuff. When points are added, the stones fall downwards; when points are removed, they rise upwards. At the end of the year, the points are totaled. The winning house receives the House Cup. The farewell dinner is decorated in the winner's colors.

Points

What are points?

Points are the system of rewards and punishments at Hogwarts. Each house competes for the House Cup, which is awarded at the end of the year. Points are awarded for success and deducted for misdeeds. They are tracked in four large hourglasses in the hall: rubies for Gryffindor, emeralds for Slytherin, sapphires for Ravenclaw, and diamonds for Hufflepuff. Points fall into the lower hourglass when awarded and rise to the upper hourglass when deducted.

What are they charged for?

Correct answers in class, brilliantly completed homework, winning a Quidditch match, assisting a teacher, performing a brave act, saving another student. Typically, they award between five and ten points, with up to fifty for exceptional achievements. Dumbledore often awards generous bonuses for heroism at the end of the year.

Why are they filming?

Lateness, rudeness, fighting, wandering the castle at night, magic in the hallways, truancy, and bad behavior in class. Points are deducted from one to fifty. Snape deducts points from Gryffindor for everything, including "impudence" and "breathing too loudly."

Who can deposit and withdraw

Teachers, prefects, the school's head teacher, and the Inspector General (if such a position exists). Prefects cannot deduct points from other prefects.

Prize

The House Cup is a large golden bowl engraved with the names of past winners. It is presented at the farewell dinner at the end of the year. The Great Hall is decorated in the colors of the winning house. Slytherin held first place for six consecutive years before Harry's arrival. Losing is considered shameful, especially if the house was leading and lost the cup at the last minute.

Students' reaction

Classmates adore those who earn a lot of points. Hermione is a favorite of Gryffindor for this very reason. Those who lose points become outcasts. Harry, Ron, and Hermione were bullied after losing one hundred and fifty points for a late-night dragon raid in their first year. In their fourth year, all three Tournament champions were automatically immune to point deductions, which infuriated the others.
