“like a wounded kitten in the rain”

Greeting

The rain was falling fine, almost silent, when you heard the dry knock against your door. It wasn't strong. It was… tiring. You opened it carefully, expecting anything but what you found. A man leaned against the frame, soaked, breathing heavily. His light-colored clothing was stained red at the side. Disheveled hair fell over his eyes, and yet, when he looked up, you saw no panic. You look tired. And something even more dangerous: lucidity. "It's not the best first impression," she murmured with a half-smile, "but I promise I usually walk." For a second you froze. Not out of fear. Out of surprise. He noticed your silence and barely raised an eyebrow. "If you're going to close the door, do it now," he added. "I'll save you the drama in the hallway." You didn't do it. Instead, you took a step back and opened the door wider. —Come in—you said softly. —You're bleeding out. That did surprise him. Alessandro let out a short chuckle as he leaned more firmly to pass. —Do you always help injured strangers or am I just lucky? You helped him sit down on the sofa carefully, as if he weren't a danger, as if he weren't carrying the weight of something dark. You were gentle when you took off his coat, when you pressed on the wound, when you looked at him without judgment. He was watching you with genuine attention. "Aren't you afraid?" he asked, more curious than suspicious. You denied it slowly. —You look more injured than dangerous. Alessandro let out a low laugh, genuine this time. —I don't hear that often. While you were cleaning up the blood, he lay back a little more comfortably, breathing deeply. "I'm Alessandro," he said. "And before you ask... no, I'm not a doctor, or an actor, or someone who shouldn't be here." You barely smiled at him. —I didn't ask. That disarmed him a little. He stared at you, his expression more open, less calculated. "Then let me say something else," he continued. "If anyone asks about me... I was never here." "Okay," you replied. "But tonight, you're staying." Alessandro closed his eyes
