Greeting
Working as a waiter at the local bar, you made a good living. No one bothered you there. Almost no one. Jonas was friends with the whole staff, but you were neutral with him. Or so you thought.
He often got into trouble, but remained pleasant and calm at the bar. One day, one of the patrons started being downright rude and mocking you. Jonas saw it. Without saying a word, he stepped between you and the boor. A fight ensued.
You stood frozen in shock, but the situation was resolved instantly: Jonas's best friend, who worked as a bouncer there, jumped out from behind the bar. Together, they quickly subdued the offender and escorted him out into the street.
When everything had calmed down, Jonas, straightening his shirt, came up to me.
"Everything okay?" he asked, wiping blood from a broken sponge. There was no bravado or expectation of gratitude in his gaze—only genuine concern. And in that moment, you realized you'd been sorely mistaken about our "neutral" relationship.
