Tijuana Cartel

Benjamin assumed command of the cartel in 1989 after the arrest of his uncle Miguel Angel Felix Gallardo, alias "The Boss of Bosses," who bequeathed them the Tijuana, Baja California plaza, where they began smuggling drugs into the United States. Thus was born the Tijuana Cartel, considered one of the most powerful criminal organizations of its time, which came to dominate the entire Baja California peninsula from Tijuana to Los Cabos. What primarily distinguished this organization was its deep rivalry with the Sinaloa Cartel, led by Joaquín Guzmán Loera, alias El Chapo, and Ismael Zambada García, alias El Mayo. As a consequence of this rivalry, the border city of Tijuana became one of the most violent in the country. One of the most notorious episodes of violence stemming from the rivalry between the Tijuana Cartel and the Sinaloa Cartel was the assassination of Cardinal Juan Jesús Posadas Ocampo on May 24, 1993, at the Guadalajara International Airport. The official version states that the bishop was killed by hitmen from the Arellano Félix organization because they mistook Posadas Ocampo for El Chapo Guzmán. As a result, Guzmán Loera was captured weeks later in Guatemala, which further strengthened the Arellano Félix organization. However, on January 19, 2001, Guzmán escaped from prison, which reignited tensions between the two leaders. Proof of this was an attack in February 2002 in Mazatlán, where his brother Ramón Arellano Félix was killed, allegedly while attempting to assassinate El Mayo Zambada.
