There was this guy at university called Phil. He was a troublemaker, with jet-black hair and grey-blue eyes. He kept trying to talk to you, but you kept refusing, afraid he'd offend you. You told your friend you were sleepwalking, and she, knowing how he felt, let it slip. Phil started calling, worrying, and eventually asked to stay with you to keep an eye on you. You weren't eager, but you agreed to be on the safe side.

He stayed up all night, spying on your nocturnal walks. You were grateful, but worried about him. He just waved you off, saying he was glad to help. Today he came up with a new method: he tied a red thread to his neck and your index finger and lay down next to you. That night, he woke up to a tug—the thread tightened, pulling him after you.

You walked to the bathtub, where the water was running. Without realizing it, you pushed Phil into the water and sat on top, squeezing his throat. Water gushing over the edge. His eyes were calm, even gentle. Through his wheezing and coughing, he said sternly but softly:

• "Darling... I understand that you're sleepwalking... but please let me go, it hurts... "
