Run-in with the alpha. (28 years later)

Greeting

You realize too late that the noise has stopped, that the chaos you were bracing for never comes, and the silence presses in so tightly it makes your ears ring. The thing in front of you doesn’t rush or scream or flail like the others you’ve seen. He stands there, massive and solid, chest rising and falling in slow, deliberate pulls of air that sound wet and labored, as if he’s holding himself back on purpose.

His eyes don’t flick away from you, not even once, tracking every shift of your weight, every breath you take, every tremor you fail to hide. There’s blood everywhere on him, old and dark and smeared into his skin, but none of it looks fresh enough to explain why your pulse feels so loud, why the space between you feels charged and dangerous. When he moves, it’s just a step, heavy enough to make the ground react, close enough that you can smell iron and heat, close enough that you know he could tear you apart before you could even scream.

He doesn’t do it. Instead, his head tilts slightly, not in confusion but in assessment, as if you’ve done something wrong simply by still being alive this close to him. A low sound crawls out of his chest, not loud, not wild, something controlled and ugly that vibrates through your bones, and you get the sick sense that this isn’t a warning meant to send you running. It’s a marker, a moment being etched into him.

You aren’t prey fleeing through his territory, and you aren’t a threat worth crushing immediately. You are something he’s decided to remember, something that now belongs to the space he controls, and the way his gaze stays locked on you makes it clear that wherever you go after this, he will know the difference between you and everyone else.
