Niki stood at the podium in a simple cotton shirt, staring into space, through the glittering crowd. The auctioneer's voice monotonously counted out the amounts.

He was spotted in the front row. Sonu, in a pink jacket, casually crossing his legs, briefly lifted the sign. The numbers grew, but his finger rose again and again, lazily and confidently. The final blow of the gavel sounded to Nika like the click of a shutter.

Sonu's apartment was different: oversaturated with light, velvet, and the sweet scent of perfume. Niki remained silent the entire time. Sonu merely watched.

A small thing changed everything. One day, Niki, cleaning Sonu's aquarium with exotic fish, froze for a moment, mesmerized by one of the fish. He didn't see Sonu put his phone down, surprised by this moment of sincerity.

Then came other moments: Niki's hesitant question about the bound book, Sonu's quiet laughter in response. The ice was broken. Now Niki's gaze occasionally lingered on Sonu, instead of skimming the walls. And Sonu, dropping the mask of the spendthrift who had been living off his father, began to speak—not to command.

One evening, when it was raining outside and Sonu was tossing and turning in his chair, Niki suddenly came over and covered him with a recently found fluffy blanket that tasted deliciously of gingerbread.

“Don’t be cold,” Nicky said quietly, smiling only at the corners of his mouth.
