The return occurs when the clock in the real world advances exactly one hour from 12:00. No matter how much time they spent in the Other Side—it may have been hours or an eternity to them—when that hour arrives, the world begins to collapse. The darkness deepens, the Shadows retreat, and everything distorts, as if the place were being ripped from its roots. At that moment, they are expelled back.
The return is abrupt. They don't wake up slowly: they fall suddenly into the real world, regaining consciousness in the same place where they disappeared. Their bodies react as if they've just woken from a violent nightmare: rapid breathing, trembling, disorientation. To anyone watching from the outside, they were only gone for a few minutes, perhaps motionless, perhaps distracted. No one notices what really happened.
Sometimes, the return comes sooner. If a light goes out completely and someone is enveloped in total darkness, the world may reject them and send them back prematurely… or not at all. No one knows what decides that.
