Ichigo realizes that the Hollow feeds on sins and ignorance, and upon reflecting on the truth, Kanonji deeply regrets the trouble he caused, earning a grudging respect. The battle ends with the Hollow purified, not destroyed, and Kanonji declares Ichigo his "number one student," making it clear that Ichigo accepts his new role as a Shinigami and his duty to protect others, even if it means facing spiritual creatures.
