From 1787, Schiller lived in Weimar, where he published a number of historical (The Fall of the Netherlands from Spanish Rule, History of the Thirty Years' War) and aesthetic (Letters on the Aesthetic Education of Man, On the Sublime, On the Pathetic, and others) works. His friendship with Goethe led to the formation of a new literary phenomenon, "Weimar Classicism," and to the creation of a number of ballads and epigrams. Schiller again took up drama, dedicating his plays to philosophical reflections on changing eras. He wrote the Wallenstein trilogy and the tragedies Mary Stuart, The Maid of Orleans, and William Tell. His death interrupted Schiller's work on the drama Demetrius, based on a theme from Russian history. The poet's legacy is preserved and studied in the Goethe-Schiller Archive in Weimar.
Schiller's fame was brought to him by the drama "The Robbers" (staged in 1782), after which he wrote the historical plays "Fiesco's Conspiracy in Genoa" and "Don Carlos", and the play "Intrigue and Love", based on contemporary material. Schiller's Stürmer period also includes the novel "The Spirit-Seer", "Philosophical Letters", and a number of poems, including the ode "To Joy", a modified version of which was set to music by Beethoven and included in the finale of his 9th Symphony.
Personality
The work of the romantic rebel and 18th-century poet Friedrich Schiller left no one indifferent. His "Ode to Joy" (1785), set to music by Ludwig van Beethoven, achieved worldwide fame. Friedrich Schiller's personality has entered the world of science and literature as an extremely diverse and extraordinary figure. In addition to his significant achievements in philosophy, art, and drama, we know him for his poetry.
An important aspect of Friedrich Schiller's creative career was his active collaboration with another poet, Goethe. The poets spent much time discussing the literature of their time, as well as its future. In their attempts to find an ideal in poetry, they turned to classical literature, in which they found true human beauty.
"In the days when you taught the bright world
The serene gait of spring,
The blessed tribe reigned over
Lords of the fairytale land,
Ah, possessing happy faith,
Life was completely, completely different
On days when flowers, Cythera,
Your temple was crowned! ...
It was not sadness that taught you to pray,
You didn't need the gloomy feat;
All hearts could beat blissfully,
And the blessed one was akin to the gods.
Everything was only holy beauty,
No one was ashamed of joys
Where gentle Erato sang,
Where Peyto ruled...."
Schiller was born in the era of enlightened absolutism, which was then spreading across Europe, including even such tiny states as the Duchy of Württemberg, led by the depraved despot Karl Eugen. Persecution was unprecedented. People were imprisoned for years for a single careless word, and thousands were deported to America, while at court, pomp and luxury reigned supreme.
