Relationships with the outside world (important for plot hooks)

1. Police (Sergeant Nash, Lieutenant Fuller):
   · They perceive girls as "hysterical students" who panic over pranks. The relationship is steeped in the patriarchal condescension of the 1970s.
   · They react slowly. "Is your friend missing? She probably went to see her boyfriend. Call tomorrow."
   They can only be convinced by irrefutable evidence (blood, obvious signs of forced entry). Even then, their actions will be methodical, not impetuous.
2. Neighbors and locals:
   Elderly Mrs. Mac is the one who saw Claire enter the house but never come out. She may be the source of important but vague information ("I saw a shadow in the attic..."), which would initially be attributed to the imagination of an elderly woman.
   The man from the house across the street is a suspicious character who keeps watching through the window. A red herring (a red herring) or a possible accomplice?
   The remaining students and professors on campus are distant and busy with their own affairs. The world outside the sorority house goes on with its life, unaware of the horror within.
3. Guys (Peter, Chris, etc.):
   Relationships can be tense. Guys may consider girls "crazy," not believing in danger until it's too late.
   Physical distance: They live on the other side of town or in their own fraternity. To get their help, you have to call them or walk down a dark street.
4. Abstract Threat - "The Caller"/Billy:
   He's not just a killer. He's part of the house itself. His whispers, songs, and childish babble come from the pipes, from behind the doors.
   His relationship with his victims is perversely intimate. He observes, studies, and mimics their voices. He knows their fears and secrets.
   · He is a symbol of toxic masculinity and madness, perhaps generated by this house itself (the story of the murder of a girl in the past).

Sound atmosphere:
· Silence: It's loud. The creaking of floorboards, the howling of wind in the pipes, the hum of the refrigerator.
· Telephone: Its ringing is sharp and frightening. It may ring at the most inopportune moments.
· Radio/player: Christmas music plays in the background (in ironic contrast) or 70s rock (The Who, King Crimson - like in the film).
· Noises from outside: Occasional passing cars, mixed choir from a church choir (heard from far away), barking of a neighbor's dog.

How characters communicate: 1974 technology

1. The telephone is the main instrument of fear and communication.
   · Stationary in the hallway. To talk, you need to leave the room. Others can overhear the conversation.
   · No caller ID, no answering machine. You don't know who's calling. You can only listen.
   Local calls are free, but long-distance calls are expensive. This can lead to arguments ("Who took so long to talk to John?").
   · Broken wire - complete isolation from the world.
2. Physical presence. Most interactions happen face-to-face. Kitchen gatherings over coffee, conversations in the living room. To learn something, you have to go out and find the person.
3. Notes. They are left on the refrigerator or door: "Barb, your mom called. 8:00 PM." Dark game: anonymous, frightening notes may appear.
4. No cell phones or internet. This is key! You can't quickly call the police if you leave the house. You can't Google information. You can't contact a friend if they're not home. The feeling of isolation and helplessness is greatly increased.

Background and Atmosphere: Pi Cap Sigma Sisterhood

Time and place: December 19-24, 1974. The campus of a fictional university in a quiet Canadian/American town, blanketed in snow. Vacation is in full swing, and most students have gone home.

Sorority House: This is not a modern dorm, but an old, once opulent Victorian or Gothic mansion that the fraternity has purchased or rented.

· Exterior: A gloomy, multi-story building with dark tiles, turrets, and large but dirty windows. Snow lies on the roof and eaves, but the sidewalks are cleared. The feeling of a "big, empty, dark house" must be constant.

Inside: A contrast between former luxury and current student life. High ceilings, moldings, a fireplace in the common room—but everything is shabby. The furniture is a mix of antique sofas and cheap student armchairs. On the walls are photos of former sorority groups, Christmas garlands made of popcorn, and rock band posters. Evidence of a recent party is everywhere: empty bottles, ashtrays. The main feature is a huge, winding staircase leading to the dark upper floors and the attic.

Key locations in the house:

1. Living room (main hub): Christmas tree with garlands, telephone on the table in the hallway (key object!), sofas, record player.
2. Kitchen: Strewn with empty beer crates, a cold pizza on the table. The smell of old coffee and cigarettes.
3. The girls' rooms: Small, private, each furnished to suit their own taste. The windows overlook the courtyard or the deserted street.
4. The Attic: Stuffed with the junk of past generations of students. Dusty, cold, with a small, boarded-up window. A killer's lair. Strange noises (creaking, footsteps, whispers) can be heard from there.
5. The entrance door with stained glass: Through it, only distorted silhouettes of those outside are visible. Next to it is a panel with doorbell buttons.

Lieutenant Kenneth Fuller
Appearance: a respectable man of a certain age.
Character: Professional, sensible, has a paternal aura that inspires a sense of security.

Sergeant Nash is dismissive of the girls' complaints and doesn't take them seriously. Yet, he possesses a certain charm.

Mr. Harrison: Claire's father; arrives at the dorm to pick up his daughter and discovers her missing. Appearance: An older man, dressed conservatively.
Personality: Concerned, yet strict and judgmental. Immediately negatively evaluates the atmosphere in the dorm, considering it immoral.

Billy.
Appearance: Dark-haired, pale, lanky, with short, curly hair and small pupils, wearing an olive-green turtleneck, high-waisted jeans, and sweaty palms. Although it's never explicitly stated, Billy may have some connection to 6 Belmont Street, as suggested by the toys in the attic and his manic phone calls. Prior to the events of the film, Billy had already stalked the sorority sisters who lived there, cursing them and threatening to kill them.
Little is known about the killer; his real name and appearance remain a mystery. The film shows only his hands, eye, and silhouette during the murders. Billy had been calling the female students' dormitory for several weeks before the first murder, earning the nickname "Moaner" due to his hoarse voice. It's possible he was prompted to commit the crime by Barb Coard, who interrupted the call, although this is unlikely, as he had already raped a local girl.
Billy's past involved living at home with his parents and younger sister, Agnes. He knew the address of the dormitory and had called there before.

Claire Harrison She is shown to be somewhat innocent and naive and is constantly at odds with Barb Coard, one of her Pi Kappa Sig sorority sisters and a big-mouthed drunk.
Appearance: a young girl with long blonde hair.
Personality: Claire was a sensible and naive Pi Kappa Sigma member who befriended Jess Bradford. She dated Chris Hayden, whom everyone liked. She became involved with Barb Coard, an alcoholic sorority sister, possibly out of jealousy over Chris. Claire warned Barb about a mysterious caller who insulted them and might have been involved in a rape. She was caring, loved animals, and discovered her cat, Claude, on her bed. Before leaving for home, Claire showed determination in packing and courage in testing the closet, which led to her death.

Peter Smith He is Jess Bradford's boyfriend and an aspiring pianist who suffers from emotional problems, which manifest when he tries to intimidate Jess into leaving their unborn child and calls her hysterically.
Appearance: A man with long blond hair, wearing a green turtleneck.
Personality: Peter is portrayed as neurotic, emotionally unstable, and prone to violent outbursts. His behavior can be characterized as unpredictable and impulsive. He displays strong emotions, especially in situations involving Jess and their unborn child. His jealousy and attempts to control Jess lead to aggression and threats. Ultimately, his actions lead to tragic consequences, both for himself and for those around him.

Phyllis "Phil" Carlson is a well-read and quiet girl who is friends with her fellow Pi Kappa Sigma sorority members.
Appearance: a woman with curly brown hair and brown eyes, wearing glasses and earrings.
Personality: Phyllis is a quiet, shy, and caring student. She is friends with Jess Bradford, Barb Coard, and Claire Harrison, and her relationships with other characters highlight her kindness and loyalty. Phyllis shows concern and support during difficult moments, such as when Claire disappears, and actively participates in the search for her missing friend. Barbara "Barb" Coard is a sorority sister of Pi Kappa Sig and is depicted as a loudmouth and promiscuous alcoholic.
