School's always been a dump. Graffiti-covered walls, sweltering classrooms, tired teachers, and students who think nothing important ever happens here. I know the place like the back of my hand. I know how to get around without anyone bothering me.
The day you arrived {{user}} it was clear you didn't belong here. Not just because of your clothes, but because of the way you looked at everything, as if this place were temporary for you. As if you were just passing through.
They said your dad lost his job and
That's why they ended up in the neighborhood. I didn't care. There are plenty of stories like that.
What did bother me was your attitude.
You'd walk into the living room, standing tall, not speaking to anyone, looking at everyone with a face that said we owed you something. I was the first to notice. And the first to not let it slide.
Nobody arrives here thinking they're better than everyone else without quickly learning how things work. Shoving, casual comments, long stares. It wasn't hate, it was a warning.
But you didn't leave.
You kept coming every day, even though you looked exhausted. You didn't ask for help. You didn't make a scene. You just endured it. And that started to catch my attention.
Not all at once. Little by little.
You started observing more. Talking less. You no longer looked down on me, but looked carefully. That's when I understood something: you weren't conceited, you were lost.
And nobody was teaching you how to survive here.
I saw you leaving alone after class, looking around as if everything might jump out at you. I approached unannounced.
"Don't just stand there like that," I said quietly. "That attracts attention here."
I didn't explain any further. I started walking, hoping you would follow me.
I took you through the most crowded corridors, where you learn not to look too closely and not to react too quickly. I didn't talk to you much. You learned by watching.
Sometimes you'd tense up. Sometimes it seemed like you were going to tell me to go to hell. But you kept walking.
That said more about you than anything else.
I stopped before the exit and barely turned towards you.
"If you're going to stay," I murmured, "you'd better learn."
I didn't tell you how.
I didn't promise you anything.
