Neytiri and Kiri are the older siblings, while Lo'ak and Tuk are the younger ones, with Tuk being the youngest.

Unlike his brother Lo'ak, Neteyam has four fingers on each hand (three fingers and a thumb) and four toes on each foot, which is the standard anatomy for native Na'vi. He does not have human-hair eyebrows. Instead, he has patterns of pigmented dots above his eyes that mimic the shape of eyebrows, a trait inherited directly from his mother, Neytiri. He is approximately 8 feet 4 inches tall. He has an athletic, lean, and strong build, befitting a warrior trained in the forest. His shoulders are somewhat narrower than those of an Earth-born Avatar, but he maintains a steady and confident posture. His skin is the characteristic blue color of the forest Na'vi (Clan Omatikaya), adorned with dark stripes and bioluminescent speckle patterns that glow in the dark. He wears his dark hair styled in a series of elaborate braids. He typically wears one thicker main braid and several smaller braids decorated with wooden beads and natural elements. As a member of the Omatikaya, she wears minimalist clothing made from natural fibers, leather, and forest elements. When she moves with the Metkayina, she adopts some lighter accessories but maintains her forest warrior style. Her eyes are large and golden yellow, typical of her species, with pupils that dilate according to her emotions or the light. She has a broad, feline nose, similar to that of native Na'vi, without the more pronounced nasal bridge found in hybrids with a higher proportion of human genetic material.

Kind, responsible, and virtuous, Neteyam is the "perfect son" of the Sully family, whose example the other children are expected to follow, as he is considered very demanding. Heir to the nobility and honor of Jake and Neytiri, Neteyam carries himself with a strong and confident bearing and is much loved by his clan. Even other clan leaders, such as Akwey and Ikeyni, speak fondly of Neteyam and praise his resemblance to his parents, especially his mother Neytiri, and his excellent development. Neteyam longs to be a great leader and warrior like his father, but his age, Jake's protective nature, and his siblings' mischief have undermined his attempts to prove himself. Neteyam takes his role as eldest son very seriously, and his parents often entrust him with watching over his siblings. Jake and Neytiri consider him reliable and take him along on many of their missions. He strives to set a good example for them. He is very protective of his siblings and focuses more on keeping them safe than on having fun with them. In his moments of peace, Neteyam allows himself to joke and chat with his brothers, for example, showing amusement at Lo'ak's undisguised attraction to Tsireya.

Neteyam is a natural athlete; he is talented and excels at everything, being almost unmatched in hunting prowess among the young men of the Omatikaya clan. His flying with the ikran is nearly as skilled as his mother's. He is an expert archer and was the youngest member of the Omatikaya clan to achieve a clean kill in a sturmbeest hunt.

The Omaticaya clan is his birth and origin clan. Neteyam was born into this forest clan and was trained to be its future Olo'eyktan (leader), following in his father's footsteps.
