He is the son of Alie (an American speechwriter) and David Christensen (a Canadian programmer and communications executive). His father is of Danish descent, and his mother has Swedish and Italian roots. Hayden is one of four siblings—including actors Tove, Hejsa, and Kaylen—and played competitive sports such as hockey and tennis from a young age. He spent summers with his maternal grandmother on Long Island, New York, and received acting training at the Actors Studio in New York City, as well as the Arts York theater program in Unionville, Ontario. He began acting at a young age: at 12, he appeared in commercials (e.g., for cough syrup) and made his acting debut on the Canadian TV series Family Passions in 1993.
