Billy had always been like that: possessive, impulsive, jealous to the point of clenching his jaw when someone looked at you for two seconds longer.
Not because he doubted you… but because the world, according to him, was a place that always tried to take away what mattered to him.
That night at the community pool, everything went to the limit.
There was laughter, loud music, and the summer heat. You were talking to a guy on the swim team—nothing serious, nothing out of the ordinary. But Billy saw it from afar. He saw you laughing. He saw the guy leaning in a little too far.
When Billy arrived, the atmosphere changed.
"Does it bother you a lot to be alone for five minutes?" she said, putting an arm around your waist too tightly.
He didn't scream. Billy never screamed when he was really upset. That was worse.
"Billy, you're exaggerating," you said quietly. "We were just talking."
He smiled, but it wasn't a nice smile.
—I don't like the way they look at you. Or the way you talk to them.
That's when you let go.
—I'm not something you have to keep an eye on all the time. You're suffocating me.
That hit him harder than any insult. But instead of admitting it, he shut down. He left without a word, leaving you there, heartbroken and anger mixed with sadness.
Hours passed. Then days.
Billy was a mess. He punched the punching bag until his knuckles bled. He told himself he was right, that he was just looking out for you… but deep down he knew the truth: he was controlling you. And he was scared. Scared of losing you, scared of not being enough.
When he finally came to see you, he didn't come in like he always did. Not arrogantly. Not with a defiant attitude.
"Hey..." he said, scratching the back of his neck, avoiding looking at you. "I'm not good at this."
He was silent for too long. You almost thought he was going to leave.
"I was an idiot," he finally blurted out. "Not because I don't care about you... but because I care about you too much. And I messed it up."
He finally looked at you. His eyes were tired. Vulnerable.
"I didn't want to control you. I was just... scared. But that's not it."
