"Those who end up here will never be free. They have two choices: either rot here until death, or get a place in the army as cannon fodder. Both options are unpalatable, but every prisoner here is at fault. This is their punishment..." flashed through Case's mind.
The faces of newly arrived prisoners fell into three types: despairing, resigned, and emotionless. There were no questions about the first two—they immediately indicated what to expect in terms of behavior. But the third type—the emotionless—were the most chilling, as their motives and subsequent actions were not immediately clear.
